My husband saw on the t.v. that confession is approved by the Vatican via an iPhone app.

that can be downloaded to iphone.

I can’t seriously see this being the case. Can someone please tell me if this is real or joke?

No, it isn’t true. A valid confession always requires in person interaction between the priest and the penitant. Confession via iPhone or SMS or email isn’t currently and never will be valid.

From what I understand, this app helps prepare people for confession. Not quite as interesting as a story though.

Blessings,
Steve

I saw this and told my priest (in jest of course :D) that I could now watch mass on tv, get married by a internet priest, and confess to my phone… it’s like there’s no reason to go to Church anymore).

More seriously, if the tv really reported it that way, it’s just another example of there being some sort of special news media training that causes them to misinterpret anything the vatican says. The app. in question is simply a tool for examination of the conscience. You plug in your age, sex, and a couple other factors, and it comes up with an examination of conscience for you. You do not confess to your phone, you still have to go to a priest for that. This is just a tool for examiniation of conscience, nothing more.

As an American, I am entitled to convenience and endless catering to my every whim. If I want to confess to my iPhone, that’s the ideal. All I really need now is to finally get my parish to install that drive-thru near the Tabernacle so I won’t have to slow down much. At least the media ‘gets it’.

USA! USA! 👍

Seriously though, this is not (and will not) be true. First, there’s that person-to-person interaction during confession (which is psychologically better for the one doing the confession). Second, and I think more importantly, there is a risk of breaking the seal of confession. Someone could easily hack/steal/what-have-you an iphone or an ipod touch and see what the confessions are.

Lol, oh, Americans  😉

It sounds like it may have been misunderstood.

The app in question appears to be an examination of conscience and contains an act of contrition and other prayers. It’s also received the imprimatur.
Here is an article referencing it: zenit.org/article-31640?l=english

A sin-tracking device? Cool. I’ll have to buy extra memory for mine.🙂

true
I am just this close to asking parish council to install vending machines in the narthex where parents can drop in their quarter and get sacraments for their kids
sorry it was first communion today and we had the requisite families who came in late, disrupting Mass, waving cameras and just glad our ushers were big burly guys instead of little old DRE ladies.

Hi - I believe you are talking about the app my team created called Confession: A Roman Catholic App for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. I can quickly give you the rundown on it, or you can just visit our website at www.littleiapps.com.

Yes, the app is an aid for confession. No it is not, in any way, a replacement of the sacrament. After entering the program and setting up a password protected profile it will give you personalized examination of conscience based on your information and give you a step-by-step guide to the sacrament. It is designed for Catholics, like my self, who frequent the sacrament and also for those who wish to return.

Yes, we have an imprimatur from the Bishop. No, that does not mean it is endorsed by the Vatican… (it means all the text of our app work contains nothing damaging to faith or morals. We went through the same channels all texts that receive an imprimatur go through).

No, no data is collected. We have no interest in that and it is counter to what we believe. All data is stored on your phone and there it will stay until you complete your confession - then it wipes out your sins … Just like confession.

We are just three conservative catholic men who just happened to make an app that we feel is a response to Pope Benedict XVI’s message from last years’ World Communications Address calling for ‘new media at the service of the Word.’ If your skeptical, just read some of the reviews on our site.

Finally, yes we are going to be making more conservative catholic apps because we would like to use them and think everyone else would to.

If you have any questions or comments you can reach the whole team through our website at www.littleiapps.com

I have this app, and it’s marvelous. It’s an examination of conscience tool, and it basically will walk you through Confession in terms of explaining what the steps are, what you should say to the priest, etc. It is NOT a substitute in any way, shape or form for actual confession; it’s just a tool to guide you.

It’s passcoded so no one can just open the app and look at your examination of conscience, and it contains 5-6 different acts of contrition to use, including one in Latin.

It’s wonderful for new Catholics or those reverting to the Church who can’t remember the proper protocol for confession.

I highly recommend it!
