Did women once hear confessions?

In my biology class, the teacher claims that during the Black Death in Europe women were allowed to hear confessions due to the shortage of priests. I know that this cannot be true. Is there some source from which this rumor was born?

That is a question to politely ask your teacher. You might also ask respectfully why time is being taken in biology class to teach religion and history.
