Did you know that Tom Monaghan, owner of Domino's Pizza, is Catholic and pro-life?

I heard he tried to create a Catholic city in which drug stores couldn’t offer condoms and there would be no abortion clinics.
I believe it went to court, and I think he lost. 😦 But let us know if you find out more.

Yes I did! Proud Michigander! I think his city was called Ave Maria in FL & I think it was built, but maybe not to the degree he wanted.

According to Snopes, Tom Monoghan, owner of Domino’s Pizza, is both a staunch Catholic and is pro-life! Next time I order pizza, I’m ordering from Domino’s! 👍

Actually, he sold Dominoes in 1998, although he may own a small piece of it. I think he might have sold 94% of the company for about $1 billion but I am not sure on the exact numbers.

I was struck by this thread immediately because very near my house is a dominos pizza that is virtually next door to a Planned Parenthood clinic. Talk about Irony…
Of course since he no longer owns the business this is no reflection on him.

Peace
James

He’s not the owner of Dominoes Pizza’s any more he sold it a while back.

Ave Maria university in Florida is the location, be wanted to build a catholic university town, not sure how it turned out as the development was hampered by the government.

I did know that, but too bad their pizza is inedible.

Sorry people. I know there is nothing more controversial than how one likes their pizza! 😉

True enough, although I believe he still owns a significant amount of their stock, so if the company prospers, so does he.

As for the town and university he established in Florida, both named Ave Maria, there has been a fair amount of controversy. I haven’t paid much attention to the news down there, so I can’t comment on it. However, if you do a Google search you will find some news articles.

A word of warning though: the newspaper articles I have seen have been skeptical, or even hostile, regarding his undertaking there.

Ave Maria, Florida is a real city, I don’t think they have any abortion clinics there.

Where have you been, Holly? 😛 😉

I don’t know how accurate it is to say that Monoghan founded Ave Maria University. He has certainly been their biggest financial backer and was somewhat of an impetus for them moving from Michigan to Florida. Of course, they weren’t Ave Maria University until they moved down to Florida, so in that sense, I suppose it’s accurate.

He can be a lightning rod at times and has taken a lot of flack from all sides. I am certainly not in a position to pass judgment in that regard. The one thing I think everyone can agree on, though, is that he is unswervingly Catholic and has dedicated hundreds of millions of dollars for Catholic causes.

Can you shed some details on the the government hampered the development? I am not sure that the government has had much effect on the development. I think the biggest factor is that he started the development at probably the absolutely the worst time for the Florida real estate market. If you have $300-$500k to blow on a house in Florida you have a lot of options today.

He wanted to ban condoms and pornographic magazines and thy wouldn’t let him, he wanted to ban abortion clinics and they wouldn’t let him, his dream was to build a catholic town and not been able to keep that kind of thing out of the town ended that dream to some extent.

Here is a article about it:

Actually, I don’t think that anyone necessarily has stopped him. There isn’t a lot of commerce in AMT yet, so pornography and contraceptives yet to be sold. Also, I don’t believe that the government has necessarily ruled against him in any of these areas yet, just that some people have threatened to go to court over these issues. Finally, I am not sure that his inability to ban porn or contraceptives really is that much of a deal breaker. The real deal breaker is that new houses are expensive and there are a bunch of cheap used ones around.

If you are really interested in learning more about Monaghan, he wrote an autobiography called, “Pizza Tiger”, which was a firsthand account of his life as a pizza entrepreneur. Interesting story, but he struck me as being just a tad eccentric.
