After attending a workshop on domestic violence this weekend, I learned that 1 in 4 people are affected somehow and teen dating violence is on the rise. We need to inform and protect our teens.

Check it out.

One in four? Dear… Does it mean one in four girls, or one in four girls and boys together? If the latter, then it’s only logical to assume that violence will be almost limited to girls suffering from boys, since while girls can be pushy too, they can’t and won’t really force you (just very, very few will). So is one in four or I don’t know… even one in three girls being molested on dates in the US? Where’s this world going…:o

About 8% of domestic violence is done to males, 92% on females. Very tragic statistic.

I seriously think they should do something about those low convinctions for rape. Come on, most civilised countries have laws that provide for long sentences in case of rape, but no, they always have to give 1-3 years even if it’s up to 10. And sometimes they also suspend the sentence. I mean, where’s that from? No other crime gets such a lenient treatment in terms of possible vs actual penalty.

The 1 in 4 statistic, which started out as a sexual abuse/assault statistic, is false. Now I see they are using it for “domestic violence.” The real numbers are nowhere NEAR that. For the details about the studies the number came from and why it is false, see The New Victorians by Rene Denfeld.

However, that said, I am glad there is a hotline for people to get help on this issue. It’s sad that there are so many women and girls (I think the 92% vs. 8% stat is actually true) who don’t value themselves enough to just not accept that behavior. Hopefully, this hotline will help them learn how to get out and protect themselves.

Funny, in my life experience it’s greater. I have not been a victim of either. But more than half of my friends have either been sexually abused and/or been victims of domestic violence. 4 out of my 5 closest friends have either been sexually abused or sexually assaulted. Three have been victims domestic violence. Actually it’s not funny, it’s very sad.

I had a boyfiend who tried to become an abuser…I promptly told him where he could take himself. 👍 No one should put up with it.

I’m with Rayne. I’ve had dates try to force things on me but they all stopped eventually before anything physical happened. Many women I know have not been so lucky, although by and large the abuse (sexual and otherwise) has been perpetrated by relatives.
