Didn't the Gnostic Gospel of Philip already "suggest" that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' consort?

The idea that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ consort certainly isn’t new. Apparently this “doctrine” was invented and taught by the Valentinian Gnostics, According to April D. DeConick, Professor of Biblical Studies at the Rice University, “the reason that their tradition remembered Mary in this way is because they believed that marriage was the sacred creative activity of God and God’s manifestations or Aeons. They also believed that their own human marriages were reflections - what they called “an image” - of the eternal marriages of the Aeons”.
The Valentinian Gnostics wrote the Gospel of Philip, which seems to suggest that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ consort many, many years before that piece of fragment (which we know nothing about its authenticity) of Gospel that “suggests” Jesus was married was found.

There were three who always walked with the Lord: Mary, his mother, and her sister, and Magdalene, the one who was called his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary.

“The Father” and “the Son” are single names; “the Holy Spirit” is a double name. For they are everywhere: they are above, they are below; they are in the concealed, they are in the revealed. The Holy Spirit is in the revealed: it is below. It is in the concealed: it is above.

As for the Wisdom who is called “the barren,” she is the mother of the angels. And the companion of the …] Mary Magdalene. …] loved her more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her mouth. The rest of the disciples …]. They said to him “Why do you love her more than all of us?” The Savior answered and said to them,“Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness.”

The Gospel does not, however, explicitly use the word “wife” to Mary Magdalene, however it’s not very clear what the author means by “companion”.

As with most doctrinal differences by the various groups of the people called “Christian” in those first centuries…not too many “invented” the belief…it was already part of the “consciousness” of those believers…it was part of the greater “tradition” which finally was written down. Valentius didn’t “invent” the notion…if he is the author of the Gospel of Philip, the “notion” was already in the minds of many…this particular gospel just happend to put it on pater.

Each of the gospels…canonical and non-canonical were reflections of the various Christian communites in existent at the time.

Thank you for sharing this information with us. The early church fathers were constantly battling various gnostic heretics with their false teachings and false ‘gospels’ which were contrary to the four gospels of the of our Lord Jesus Christ, the epistles, and of the Tanakh. These early church fathers were able to refute these heresies through their understanding of the sacred scriptures and by the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

This latest discovery is not a real discovery of anything, it is just a re-hash of the same sort. These gnostics have not gone away during the past almost 2,000 years. Their gnosticism has reappeared at times in the symbols and concepts of Freemasonry, Mormonism, etc.

Someone certainly started it, Valentinus or not. There were true and false traditions, but someone certainly started some rumours.

I don’t think it can be proven to be any one person…there were questions being asked…discussions taking place…believers seeking to understand who this man Jesus of Nazareth was and how he lived his life…“Was Jesus married?” was a natural progression of dialog and thought, which some felt the “evidence” was sufficient enough to say…“Yes, Jesus was married.”…“Who was he married to?”…“Were rabbis married?”…and over time it was put to paper to answer the questions being asked. The idea didn’t just form one day and “someone” answered…it was a reflection of the greater community and what had come to be belived within that community.

:tsktsk:Ideas such as Jesus being married to St. Mary Magdalene being bandied about is insulting & disgusting beyond words as well as terribly offensive. Jesus is the Bridge groom and the Church is the Bride of which He gave His life for us His Bride & the gates of hell shall not prevail against.

I am not certain that I see why it even matters. The Gnostics where heretics who clearly did not teach the Truth that Jesus taught so how can they be trusted on any such thing as Jesus or His friends or disciples.
