I do not know whether you have read âmodesty threadsâ in Moral Theology forum. I am not the one to see modesty as âexterior virtue and not interior virtueâ. There, in those threads, it is qutie obvious that there are people who take the teaching of modesty as âa teaching about how to dressâ. Dress is obviously âexteriorrâ and not necessarily âa virtueâ.
In the same way one may be generous outwardly and not necessarily a virtue. The pharisees of Jesus time were the good example in the bible.
Not the same case with the 9-fruits.
It is a fact that peoplw use this teaching more for âexteriorâ
Give me an example.
Say, KINDNESS. Can one be kind, without being really kind?
Say, LOVE. Can one love, without loving?
Say, UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS. Can one understand others, without understanding?
Say SELF CONTROL. Can one have self-control without controlling himself?
I can dress modest without being modest in my heart.
I can share my riches for a show or a profit.
In fact true generousity requires KINDNESS. True modesty requires SELF CONTROL and UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERSâŚ
Take these contexts away, and lo, modesty and generousity are no longer a virtue (let alone the fruit-of-the spirit).
YOu are wrong in this one. Our virtue will be judged and tested by fire. If your virtue can stand the test, it will not be burned. Otherwise, you will see that you will have no virtue to be proud of-- and only Godâs virtue in redeeming you â the only one you can show off at the presence of The Most High GodâŚ
Our virtue will be judged by the law of God.
Our virtue is NOT necessarily identical with the fruit of the spirit. IF you have holy Spirit in you, only then your virtue is the fruit of the spirit. And you can see it whether it is from the spirit or from the wisdom of men without any spirit.
I agree with this one.
!Corinth 12:1-11 talks about âSpiritual Giftsâ. This is different. âSpritual Giftsâ are NOT âthe-fruit-of-the spiritâ. Spiritual Gifts are âtoolsâ given to each person for his/ her ministery, The Fruits-of-The Spirit are more of âresultsâ in each person. Fruits arenât tools, they are what you âharvestâ. I hope you can understand what St. Paul was trying to teach. Those are two distict topics.
Do you notice the word âSELF CONTROLâ being the context of âmodestyâ? That is one of the 9-fruits. Without it, modesty is not even a virtue !
Yes, but not to be taken out of context. Human virtue needs contextual teaching. Modesty and Generousity needs contextual teaching.
What is TRUE modesty by the way? Isnât it about self-control & understanding-of-others? Is there anything else? Letâs see, something regarding âhow to dressâ may be? I hope you can see, how it becomes too easy to trip into the same hole again. The teaching of modesty is being âsuggestiveâ regarding âjudging people from their exteriorâ
Let me quote from James regarding âpeople exterior as our standardâ:
James 2:
2 Suppose a person enters the synagogue where you are assembled, dressed magnificently and wearing a gold ring; at the same time, a poor person enters dressed in rags.
3 If you focus your attention to the well-dressed and say âCome and sit in the best seatâ, while to the poor one you say âStay standing or else sit down at my feetâ
4 **have you not, in fact, made a distiction between the two? **Have you not judged, using a double standard?
God bless you brother in Christ.
