Difference between Soul and Spirit

Do we have a spirit apart from a soul even before baptization? What are their characteristics and differences? After baptization does the Holy ghost merge in our spirit? Please enlighten.

The soul is a pure spirit. So in that sense, soul and spirit are synonymous. But normally we use the word when we speak of the qualities of a person that are not material : intelligence, emotions, mental energy etc.

Example : Her body is weakened by sickness, bult her spirit is alive and well.

Spirit is not something apart from the soul or body.

Every living thing…humans, animals, plants…have a soul…which is its life principle…but the human soul is a spirit-soul…meaning that by God’s continual Will & Divine Power…it will never die…does not age…has no parts…so it can’t be broken or “stop working”…even in Hell!

For some reason this am got to thinking about soul and spirit.It had to do with the fact that when I encouter a person or persons sometimes I do not feel comfortable in that person or persons presence and I will say my spirit wants me away from them I am just very uncomfortable and want to stay away.And I don’t know if I am right in thinking this way.
Regarding soul we are taught that if your soul has mortal sin you must go to confession and that if you die with mortal sin on your soul you cannot enter in Heaven.

So I feel there is a difference and if not why do I feel this way when around certain people or it could be a place.

I also read somewhere where animals have souls I do not think they do.but I believe all creatures as well as humans all possess a Spirit.

2. i Thes 5:23: … that your whole spirit, and soul, and body …
3. Heb 4:12: … division of the soul and the spirit, …

Dear gap51 Thank you it confirms what I believe that we have a spirit and a soul.But I still need to know the exact difference if that makes sense.I know our soul can be blacken by mortal sin/maybe it is like a gauge put there by God,that records our sins,but to me spirit is who we are, our personality,and we are in this shell of a body that gets us around. Don’t know if I am making any sense. I often say my spirit is not comfortable around this person or persons or my spirit isn’t comfortable in this place. Thanks again.

In most of these, “soul” and “spirit” are being used as parallel poetic synonyms.

For example, you might say,

“My body rejoices to run across the grass, and my flesh is happy to speed across the meadow.”

Body and flesh aren’t exactly the same thing, but “flesh” stands for “body” in this sort of verse.
