Could someone provide a few key differences in translations, and reasons for your particular preference of the two?

Also, is there an online copy of either text?

You can at least buy the RSVCE for $39.99 from logos.com/ebooks/groups/ebooks/bibles though you need to download the free Libronix system too. This is beautiful state-of-the-art bible software.

I’ve got the NAB and NRSV and you can get the NJB too.
 
The Navarre Bible uses the RSVCE translation and the footnotes and comentary are extensive.
 
But there is a single book commented RSV-2 Bible? Like a NAB or Bible of Jerusalem.

I’m also looking for mainstream protestant, not evangelical commented Bibles.

Perhaps you didn’t “get the memo”, but this is NOT truly the RSV-CE, despite what the title page claims. There are three verses in Romans from which you can tell right off; to wit,

5:5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.

9:5 to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.

In the first two verses quoted, the REAL RSV-CE has “who”, not “which”, for referring to the Holy Spirit.

In the third verse, in the REAL RSV-CE, the italicized phrase is rendered “Christ, who is God over all, blessed for ever.”

What you see here is a hybridized version of the 1971 RSV NT with only a smattering of changes from the 1965 Catholic edition. Unfortunately, copyright restrictions are in effect for the RSV-CE.
