An abbey is a monastery, but a monastery isn’t necessarily an abbey. An abbey is an autonomous monastic house of no fewer than twelve members, and governed by an abbot (or abbess, as appropriate). (And a priory is governed by a prior or prioress)
Monastics live in monasteries; Friars live in Friaries.
