Different readings for today, what gives?

Hi all,

I like to download and listen to the USCCB podcast of the Daily Mass readings in the morning. Then in the evening I download EWTN’s Today’s Homily podcast which has the readings and homily from the daily Mass on EWTN. Today the USCCB had a reading from Numbers and the Gospel was from Matthew but when I listened to EWTN they had a readings from Sirach and Galatians and the Gospel was from Luke. Is there an alternate lectionary parishes can use? I did hear incense being used during the EWTN Mass because they were celebrating the feast of their titular saint (also a solemnity they said). Any ideas?

The Franciscans celebrate August 2 as the feast of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula. They would use the readings appropriate for the feast day. Non-Franciscans would use the readings for Tuesday of the 18th week of Ordinary Time.

Celebrations on the liturgical calendar are technically classified in a hierarchy and so particular feasts and solemnities can outrank others. This happened at my own parish last Sunday as we (locally) were celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the parish which outranks the Feria day of “18th Sunday in Ordinary Time”.

Religious have different calendars from the Universal Calendar for the Latin Church. It contains the saints of their institute and other commemorations.

Also each Diocese will modify the calendar with its patron being a solemnity. Each parish also treats its patron as a solemnity.

The USCCB will not keep track of all this and will give the standard readings of the day from the Universal Calendar for the United States.

It is also important to note that usually the standard readings for the day are taken for memorials but it is the option of the priest to take the proper readings for that saint if there are any.

Regarding the reference to the anniversary of the “founding” of a parish outranking a Sunday in Ordinary Time, I assume you meant the anniversary of the dedication of your church, which is a Proper Solemnity and is #4 on the Table of Liturgical Days According to their Order of Precedence [General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar]. The founding of a parish would probably fall under “Other feasts proper to an individual church” which is #8, while Sundays in Ordinary Time come in at #6.
