There are (or at least were in the previous generation) many Catholic subcultures, often related to ethnicity. Different groups focused on different things.

Sort of like Catholics having devotions to different aspects of the Virgin or different aspects of Christ…Virgin of Guadelupe, Child of Prague, etc.

There were some very gloomy subcultures of Catholicism that pushed suffering, said it was good and told their kids that having too much fun or laughter was not a good thing. There were subcultures that focused on martyrs and encouraged self mortification. These may have been enclaves as opposed to a certain ethnicity, but hopefully you get my point.

Maybe this person was exposed to that flavor of Catholicism, and that is what they saw and heard. When and where I grew up, a happy Catholic was looked upon suspiciously. People grumbled about Vatican II and this nonsense of being joyful. The only place and time we were supposed to be walking with Christ was during his passion, not at the wedding at Cana, not when he had dinner at Simon’s house, that Crucifix was at the front of the Church to remind us what being a Catholic meant.

And yes, one of the things I heard then and now is that Protestants have it all wrong because they focus on joy, and feeling good etc etc.

So I can see how this person might have gotten that idea.
