In her book Reading the New Testament Pheme Perkins writes “Scholars think that some of the individual stories may have been gathered into collections. The parables which form the basis for Jesus’ teaching in Mark 4:1-34 might be taken from such a collection. The doubling of several miracle stories (calming the storm: Mk 4:35-41; 6:45-52; feeding the multitude 6:34-44; 8:1-9; healing the blind: 8:22-26; 10:46-52) suggest that there may have even been different collections that contained different version of the same story” (204).
I don’t have a problem with the idea of different versions of the same story, but I compared Mark 4:35-41 to Mark 6:45-52 and they seem like different stories rather than different versions.
Here is what I came up with. What do you think?
Mark 4:35-41
Before: Jesus is teaching by the sea (v. 1). Later Jesus is alone with the twelve (v. 10) and he explains the parables to them (v. 10-34).
Verse 35 is the evening of the same day.
There are other boats with them when they cross over and Jesus is with them in the boat (v. 35-36).
Verses 37-41: Jesus is in the stern asleep. A storm arises, waves beat the boat and begin to fill it. The Disciples wake Jesus, he rebukes the wind and waves. The winds cease and Jesus ask them why they are afraid, have they no faith.
Mark 6: 45-52
Before: The disciples have returned from being sent out (v. 7-13).
Verses 31-32 Jesus decides to take the disciples to a lonely place to rest.
Verses 33-44 Crowds follow them and Jesus teaches and feeds them.
Verse 45 Jesus sends the disciples away in a boat to cross over to Bethsaida while he stays behind to dismiss the crowds.
Verse 46. Jesus goes up to a mountain to pray.
Verse 48. Disciples battling the wind that is against them.
Verses 48-52: Jesus walks to them on the water, disciples are afraid but he calms them and gets into the boat and the wind ceases.
