I am working on a comic for my job at a design agency. They write it, and I draw it. The main character is a woman who wants to be a scientist, and I am seriously struggling with scrupulosity with it because of all the traditional teachings on what Women should and shouldn’t do.
Almost none of these things I would scrupe over would make sense to normal conservative Catholics, but I’ve surfed the web long enough to know that there is always a saying by a Saint that corroborates an opinion that it is a sin to do something that is considered an indifferent matter in our present age. According to the story, they want a picture of the Girl as a gymnast, and I’m sure there will be other incidents that I will somehow worry about as being improper for a woman to do.

I just got hired by the agency, and while I know that Christ is more important than my job, I have told my Mother that I would not endanger myself without speaking with my Spiritual Director about taking a drastic course of action. I wanted to ask for prayer that I would overcome scrupulosity, and if there is really a moral issue that I must take a stand on, that I would be gentle and firm in standing for it.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I am a Catholic woman and before becoming a SAHM I was a scientist. Faith and science are not mutually exclusive. If you believe in God you can see His wonders also in the beauty of biology, physics, chemistry or math.
Also, as a scientist, you can put your passion and knowledge at the service of other people and for the Glory of God.
Be at peace.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Father help this person follow your word to help guide her in life in making the right decisions. In your name, Jesus amen!

Is your difficulty with this in promoting women in the workplace when “ideally” women are supposed to be at home raising the children? This is indeed how the Church recommends the family life be established. Unfortunately (and the Church recognizes this) reality doesn’t allow this lifestyle for most families. Very few families can afford for the Father to be the only income. Most families, including my own personally, depend entirely on two incomes. My wife makes more than me (my job at school is considered full time at 30 hours) yet we couldn’t pay our bills if only one of us was working. In the future, God willing, if I am able to secure a teaching job and we can all live reasonably on my income alone, then I would like my wife to transition to the home. Not because I command her and she is beneath me, but because this is the Christian ideal for the family (something my wife agrees with and hopes will happen for us). This isn’t to say that women are incapable of doing good work, women have led the way in countless advancements in science, medicine, archaeology, etc. They have much to contribute to the work force. It is not “bad” that women are working. It’s just not “good” either.

that was one of my concerns. As far as I know, however, the character in this story is single. I just have heard from traditional folks that women shouldn’t go to university and stuff like that. I don’t share that opinion, but I’ve always been sympathetic to the strictest interpretations of things as part of my mental makeup.

I used to roll in traditional circles and while most people there are honestly striving to love God with all their hearts, minds, and souls, these same communities can be nests for people with very toxic mentalities to congregate. Women shouldn’t have to go into the work place. But society doesn’t promote the nuclear family anymore and does everything it can to undermine it. Dual income families are just a necessity for most people these days. With this in mind, there’s nothing wrong with women going to college or working. Those fringe elements that say this is wrong are themselves wrong.

St. Dymphna, please intercede.
