Hi again,

My friend just called me to warn me about the gunman who killed the police officer last night still on the loose. He warned me not to go to Mass at my church because it won’t be safe. I had planned on attending the 4pm Vigil, But I’m afraid to venture out tonight.

If this guy isn’t caught by tomorrow, I may skip Sunday as well! (I can hear multiple sirens going right now).

So, do you think that am I committing a grave sin by putting my safety first? Please tell me if I am.

Stuart

Oh yeah,

I intend to go to Confession next Saturday anyway, and I’ll tell the priest about this situation.

Thanks once again!

The cop killing was related to a traffic stop, I don’t see a church connection.

Thanks. As I said, this is a safety issue. I don’t live is a very safe neighborhood, and even though my church is within walking distance, I don’t want to take any chances. As I said, if I have to, I’ll go to confession next Saturday.

I think your ‘friend’ should have held his peace. What are you supposed to do for the rest of your life…live in fear? Did your friend tell you not to go shopping or to work, too? Life is a journey and at the same time it is an adventure. Fear of the unknown and or unlikely is not living a full, Christian life. Put it in God’s hand rather than some friend. Peace.

Thanks MaryEstelle,

You’re right! I did go anyway. I was terribly afraid to venture out, but I attended Mass and enjoyed the service. Next time I listen to God!

In general, in these kinds of situations, it’s good to listen to what the civil authorities tell you rather than a friend (unless your friends happens to be a civil authority who has special knowledge of the situation.)

If they tell citizens to stay off the streets and shelter in place then listen to them and stay where you are. It is safer for law enforcement, other citizens, and of course you if you stay home. This would especially be the case if you had further opportunities to attend Mass. It would be a similar case you were trying to figure out whether to adventure out if there was a serious storm or had been a natural disaster.

But if civil authorities are just asking people to be careful and/or have not made any special statements about staying off of the streets, then go to Mass.

You might consider finding out if your parish has any kind of social media means of notifying parishioners if Mass ever needs to be cancelled due to an emergency.
