Thales of Miletus, cca 550 BC, a great mathematician, actually the first scientist, he believed the earth is flat. There is a quite popular geometry theorem that he discovered and is learned nowadays in middle/high school, Thales Theorem of Similar Triangles. It is true that some people in the middle ages used his views to understand nature.
It is easy to find one or two people who believed the earth was flat, you can still find them now. In general though man has always known the earth was round. Finding one black sheep does not make the entire herd of white sheep an exception to a rule.

Thales? Black sheep in science? You certainly have skipped geometry in high school.
This is where some people can’t get it; brilliant people under the wrong assumptions produce wrong assertions…This the result of the “glamorous” view of science, producer of all truths and solver of all problems…don’t wish for you to check it up in a hospital…

The context was flat earth. Where did the rest come from? I’ve moved on.

Aristotle had the Earth as round.
