When you first become a priest, what happens? Are you assigned to a diocese or are you supposed to go find one you like and then apply to it?

When you first become a priest, what happens? Are you assigned to a diocese or are you supposed to go find one you like and then apply to it?

You apply to a diocese or order first. If they accept you, they send you to a seminary for training. After ordination, the diocese or order assigns you to a parish, mission, school, whatever.

A diocesan Priest will remain in his diocese for his whole career (unless he is sent for further education). An order Priest will go wherever the order sends him.

You enter the seminary as your diocese.

If one lives in chicago he would more than likely enter the sem under the Chicago jurisdiction

Unless of course you wish to enter a religious order
