What are the dissimilarities between Dionysus, and Jesus Christ?

They both were born of a virgin, healed the sick, same birth day etc.

Thank you for replies.

For starters, Jesus is a historical person with credible documentation aside from Church writings attesting to his existence.

Same birthday? We do not know Jesus’ birthday. I have the same birthday as Abraham Lincoln. So?

Born of a virgin? Virgin-born gods (and dying/resurrected gods) tend to post-date Christianity.

Where the information in your original post come from?

Thank you for your reply. Uh…youtube. Bad source of information right!

First, ‘born of a virgin’? You have to be kidding me. Born of either Zeus and Semele or Zeus and Persephone by all the legends (Ever read Edith Hamiton’s Greek Mythology and Roman mythology?) Healed the sick? The wine drunk in his honor led to frenzies. The only healing was a pseudopsychological babble that being drunk ‘freed the person’ from constraints. Same birthday? Considering that we have no birth certificates for either, and that sharing a birth date is something that each of us does with MANY other people, I ask, So what? One of my kids has the same birth date as Madonna, one same as Calvin Coolidge, and one as Babe Ruth. None of them are pop stars, presidents, or pro ball players.

If you want real answers about Catholicism, talk to your parish priest and ask him to recommend some books. Or ask the apologists here–they’d be glad to give you some tips so you aren’t out there basically getting lost among a lot of questionable ‘info’ that you are trying to string together to make ‘mean something’. It just won’t work that way, hon–you have to have a real foundation to build something that lasts, not just gather up a brick here, a shell here, some sticks in another place, stack them more or less together, and announce you have a house!!!

Come on, YOU TUBE?

You have bad information, and this is an absurd question.

Dionysus was a Greek god, born out of the thigh of Zeus as the product of his union with Semele, whom he killed upon having intercourse with her. She had asked him to have sex with him in the primitive, elemental manner in which he has sex with his wife, Hera. Hera, out of jealousy, tricked Semele into making Zeus promise this beside the river styx, which makes any promise binding. Semele could not survive this type of union with Zeus, and was blown to pieces. Does this sound like the Virgin birth?

Dionysus was the god of wine, drunkenness and abandonment to the senses - the opposite of reason. He often showed up in Greek poems uninvited to wreak havok.

If you can find a parallel with the story of Christ, then you’re really stretching it.

Dionysus was not born of a virgin. It appears that the “first” Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Persephone or Demeter, but he was killed by the Titans. Conflicting stories say that Zeus either “consorted” (their word) with Semele, or gave her the first Dionysus’ heart in a drink, and she was impregnated by that. At any rate, Greek myth is quite universal in the message that Zeus was not above taking on human form to impregnate his fancies himself.

Dionysus was not born of a virgin.
Exactly. Dionysus was born out of Zeus, who was no Virgin.

I think whoever tried to draw this parallel is thinking about the story of Semele, who was a virgin, but that’s where the similarities to the Virgin Mary end. I don’t recall the Holy Spirit blowing Mary to pieces 😛

Easy, Christ is real and Dionysus was a made up myth. Solved.

In addition to occurring at a set time in history, another difference between the Gospel and myth stories is the full Christian belief of the Incarnation.

We believe that the lone Supreme Being of the Universe who is also the Creator and Sustainer came from outside the natural universe in order to reconcile himself to his creatures. These were the very creatures made in His image. Christians believe he did this for the same reason he initiated the creation in the first place - out of pure unbounded selfless love.

All other myth stories we either polytheistic or pantheistic.

Dionysus never existed he is a character in Greek mythology. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Second Person of the Holy Trinity, who became man and took on human form in the viginal womb of his human mother Mary, was born, lived, suffered was crucified, died and was buried, rose again and ascended to heaven. This is an historic event around which all human history revolves.
