Discussing someone’s faults with a third party is usually considered a sin (especially if it’s the faults of family members, e.g. parents, you’re discussing). My question is, is such a discussion still considered a sin if its purpose is to get advice about dealing with a situation or problem? There are times when I feel the need to discuss something, a combination of letting off steam and asking advice on how to deal with a situation, but I usually keep my mouth shut because I often think “Would it be a sin to talk about X like this?” So what is acceptable with something like this?

For the purposes of getting advice, no; however, one has to pick a trustworthy person from whom to obtain that advice.

Also, those who find themselves trying to “get advice” from several different people may want to examine their motives for going from person to person.
