So for about 2-3 months I’ve really been working on my relationship with God. I’ve been Catholic my whole life and have had times when I’m closer to Him than others, but this time I’m trying to once and for all completely give myself over, live for Him until He calls me home. I’ve been careful to persevere and seek God through everything, and I do. The thing is, there are times I feel dare I say a disinterest in God. I pray nevertheless and I hold on, but it’s so easy to just let go at that point. Even though I know who God is, the maker of the universe, alpha omega, EVERYTHING, I feel…almost nothing. I don’t know that this is dryness, because for me dryness is when I am interested in God and I want to find Him, but can’t. Well times like right now I feel almost no desire to seek Him out…I force myself to. Thoughts?

Read the Gospels, meditate on how Christ felt when everyone left him but John.

You may also want to try to make some weekday masses.

Meditation on creation and the complexity of life might help you.

Pray for the gift of loving God more each day.

I have so been there. You need to do a couple of things. First pray. If that does not work, pray harder.

Finally, and this is something that worked for me once upon a time…get angry. There was a time in my life that I was just where you are. I felt that I was living for God, but he was not listening to me. I got so mad that I yelled at him. I literally took a walk and started having a very loud pointed conversation with the father…out loud. I must have looked like a crazy person.

Still, it worked. I felt a sense of peace come over me. And, I eventually discovered that while I had been trying to live for the fahter, he had bigger plans for me. God is cool like that! In any event, it put me on the right path. I found my way to the Catholic Church after that, and I now have a relationship with him that is stronger than ever. I have even made a career of sorts out of defending the faith and the church.

Peace is out there…seek it!

Dear friend,

It might be a good idea to look at your desires, for often God leads us through them. Something may strike your curiosity and impel you to seek out an answer, and many times that is God’s inspiration causing you to seek.

Since you are asking for help as to why you feel abandonment or desolation concerning prayer, it is a cry of your heart to learn more about what is taking place, for you are truly seeking the Lord’s presence. There are a number of spiritual books that can shed light on this for you, but I hesitate to name any, preferring to let the Lord guide you.

Meanwhile, our saints have spoken about the importance of regularly spending time in meditation, and resolving never to give this up, for it is the key to relationship with Christ. St. Teresa was one who could not meditate without a spiritual book. This is good, for it inspires “thoughts” with which to converse with God. When something you read pulls your attention, stop a few minutes and talk to God about it.

At the end of the day, it is a good practice to have heart-to-heart talks with God about everything that you experienced that day, even if you have no relish for doing this. Conclude with an examination of conscience, coupled with petitions for God’s help to amend what seems problematic. Thank Him for all the gifts that came your way during the day, and lift up special people in prayer whom you know need God’s help. Rejoice in His infinite love and praise Him for His goodness.

Maybe the psalms might be helpful to find the disposition of your soul at the moment and pour it out to God prayerfully. There are psalms written for every possible condition of man, so you will be able to find one that corresponds with your situation.

May the Lord draw you closer to Himself.

Three simple things you can do:
  1. At every thought of God, pray…Lord, show me who you are and how I might come to know you.
  2. Pray daily, “Lord, put to death the desires of the flesh in me and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”
  3. If you truly desire to have the Lord come in and radically change your heart, pray: “HOLY SPIRIT, Fall on Me! Change ME, for I NEVER want to be the same again.”
To feed the work that Christ will do, spend some quiet time in the morning with Him. No Bible, no breakfast is a good rule! At least spend 5 minutes. One great book to chew on in the early days of your walk with Christ is 1 John. It will motivate you to want to know more.

God bless you!
