Dissecting an ad for Pre-Inquiry / for Utah

I am placing an add in our local newspaper here in Utah. It is for pre-inquiry in advance of the inquiry for the RCIA. We need this one door to our faith always open. If you have sells or marketing experience or just have a few Ideas of your own please fill free to pick this apart, add or subtract. Pray about it. Ask the Spirit to come down. If you are ex-Mormon that would be great as you can get into the mindset of someone reading this here in Utah.

I would love to place the Catholic Answers web-site on this but in my heart I cannot because of the overtone of their writings such as this found at the end of one

This never pierces a heart for Christ in Utah, around the world, even on forums when this tone is used. It comes from a fallen people (us) trying to bring others into their fold. I can look past these tactics because I have Christ at the core of His Church. But those who do not have Christ at the center of their lives cannot look past this tone. The very people we are trying to save. If you feel the same humbly let Catholic Answers know. You know how this tone goes over on these forums at times. Could you imagine if this tone never popped up its head from Catholics here posting? I called on it a few years back to no avail. Anyway…

Like the ad! One thing I might leave out is “Do Catholics pray to Saints? Worship Mary? Exalt the Cross? etc…” Not that it needs to be taken out, but I think you told them what would be discussed already “…please come and learn about our 2000 year old Apostolic faith. Tour the Chapel; ask questions about what’s inside and what takes place.” Seems like maybe it’s a little redundant.

That’s just my personal opinion for what it’s worth. GOOD LUCK!!!
 
Correct the spelling of “foreword” to “forward.”

You might say “or just come – no advance notice required.” in stead of “come as you are.”

One really minor English grammar issue. After your phone number, make it a comma instead of a new sentence. “If you have questions please call Rich at: 881-5722, or just come – no advance notice required. Look forward to seeing you.”

Otherwise it looks great! Good Luck with this!!!
 
Rich: it looks like you have an inside track on some of their thinking and concepts. A couple of thoughts:

I would not necessarily withdraw the comments paraphrasing their misunderstanding of the Catholic faith. Consider your audience; who is it that might come? What are the questions they might have? What misunderstandings might you want to clarify? If they are specific to LDS issues with us, then I would leave them in: “Do Catholics really worship Mary?”…

Another tactic: “What does the LDS churchand Catholic Church have in common? How are they different?” There is some commonality in issues of abortion (although I hear they are weakening), the importance of family; the importance of morality; the need for a central, final decision authority…

There is a book around, very small, and written by a Catholic priest who was reaised LDS which has a side by side comparison. I don’t know if it is in print, and for the life of me I can’t remember the name, but I thought it was well done (the writer touted by Catholic Answers seemed to be slightly dismissive, something about a “post Vatican 2” priest). I’ll see if I can dig up the name…
 
Thanks for your insight. I am going to retain a bit of what was deleted. I know that they despise the cross and its shame instead of embracing it in its life giving power. We look at the fall, sin, and the Cross in such a different light than the LDS. If I could use it somewhere without offending but rather make it a curiosity I will ad it. Any suggestions?

That’s the one I was referring to. I don’t know why they don’t have it. It is from a small publishing house and perhaps is out of print; my copy was sent to me by a priest in Utah. A friend of mine, a Methodist minister, also has a copy, but I’ve not run across it anywhere else.

I suspect that Isaiah Bennet’s comments, which were more like a veiled denigration than compliment, might have something to do with it, as they carry his book. His is much more thorough, although apologetic in approach; there is also an extensive one out by two Protestant writers, and generally very well researched and foot-noted, but also apologetic in format (and takes an occasional swipe at the Church).

Apologetics has its uses, for sure, but can be seen as less or more polemical, depending on which end you are.
