Maybe I have thin skin but I have definitely noticed something quite discouraging at my University Center. First, we have a large number of associates (non-student/faculty) members who are here through some connection to the university, or in the case of many, because every other parish is too conservative (which isn’t saying much considering one of the local parishes). Anyway, they definitely fall into the Modernist camp and they provide most of the funding. 😦

Recently during the Petitions, I have begun to add one “For An End to Abortion” since the individuals in charge won’t add that petition because it might upset people, I think it is a mistake and I pray it anyway. We have a custom of opening up the petitions to the community after the written petitions, that is when I add this one.

I have received numerous glares for this and one time I was even approached by someone who wanted to talk to me after Mass. I agreed, feeling charitable, and combative. This person proceeded to offer an apology for abortion and a critique of the “unenlightened” Catholic teaching. He explained that the Church’s teaching on abortion has been changing (something I pointed out was false – didache), that what is classified as an abortion has changed (false – killing a infant in womb is abortion), and that when life begins is really up for debate because science has changed and proved false much of what the church has taught (false – conception is when somehow, someway, by God’s grace, a life is created in the womb, science aside). He then told me he hoped I would open my eyes and come to a better understanding of the issue and see that it isn’t black and white. I told him I hoped he would read the Church’s teaching and save himself.

Also at Mass, there has been a tendency of counter-petitions. Never that overt “For Pregnant Women” or “For an end to angry disagreements” but yesterday someone said “For a people who live the Gospel message of love, and not of judgement and self-righteousness.” I saw her angry look figured it was meant for me and just kinda stunned and saddened.

Anyone else have problems like this, advice for confronting it. Thank goodness I only have 3 months left here.

You have encountered the usual suspects. Social justice only. The moral law is relative and all that matters is social work with an occaisonal nod to God by throwing in the word Jesus here and there.

I see this everywhere in my diocese. It is as if one may barter with God. We may contracept, as long as we give money to a soup kitchen. We can approve of “gay” conduct becuase God loves sinners. Feelings trump the will.

Doing good works matter more than observing the moral law. That is what it is all about. The new theology.

Good work. You know you’re on the right track when they get upset about “self-righteousness” and accuse unnamed people of viewing things in “black and white.”

Unfortunately my pastors take that line in their homilies. They really do think they know more than everyone else and that we’re all a bunch of neanderthals. They think they’re standing on the outside, looking in at us stuck in our conservative mindset, when in fact we’re standing on the outside looking at them stuck in their tired old liberal system. They want really, really, really badly to change the Church’s teachings…and I wonder why? :hmmm:

My college’s Catholic chapel was the same way. Many of the orthodox who tried to work for change from within finally got fed up and just left and started attending the more conservative, orthodox, parish down the road not associated with the college.

Frankly I wouldn’t overly exhaust my self with those left-field Catholics–sounds like you have made an honest effort to direct them to the truth.

As far as being judgemental, Jesus was all about being judgemental of people’s actions, so give them the words of Jesus and ask them who they consider the “least one’s” if not the vulnerable not yet born child:

Matthew**, *Chapter 25:44-46 – ***Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

If they persist in their denial, at the end of your remaining 3 months take the advice of Jesus:

Mark**, *Chapter 6:1 – ***Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them."
