At our parish we have had, for the last two weeks or so, a priest from Nigeria. He is the only celebrant at the 8:15 Mass in the morning. We don’t have a Eucharist Minister at the 8:15 AM Mass. At the time of distribution he offers the paten and we have to take the Hosts off of the paten. I don’t think this is proper. When our pastor has morning Mass, he dips the Host in the chalice and give Communion this way.

I don’t think the priest from Nigeria is correct in his method, but maybe I am wrong.
He is now gone, but does return to our parish a couple times a year.

Perhaps, some of you more learned in this area of information, can advise me.

Thanks,

If he is offering you the paten with hosts on it like someone would offer you cookies on a plate, that is wrong. He should be giving you Communion himself - either in the hand or on the tongue.

Yes, he offered the paten and we had to take the Hosts from it. This just screamed wrong to me.

I would report the behavior to the pastor immediately, asking that the practice be corrected. If not corrected, next time it happens I would not receive and I would respectfully report the practice to the bishop.

The Vicar for Priests should be informed. If they have verified his credentials, they may not know that he does this…perhaps he does this in Nigeria. In any case, your pastor should mention this to whomever approves visiting priests to the Diocese.
