The last few nights I’ve had either very disturbing dreams, or woken up with anger or other wrong thoughts on my mind. Twice was in partial sleep, but the horrible dream of last night had me sobbing for a long time this morning. I am prone to vivid dreams and remembering them, but

I’ve been praying more before sleep, especially to St. Michael and my guardian angel. This week has been a very spiritual week for me, in a great way, but also, ‘exhausting’ spiritually/mentally. I love where I’m going, but why the sleep disturbances? I’ve not had them like this before, and I feel I’m being challenged. Part of me worries that if I’m being challenged like this even though I am praying with Mary, the Saints and to God before bed, how bad would it be if I wasn’t being helped? Of course, I think if I wasn’t praying to begin with, and drawing closer to God, I wouldn’t be receiving these challenges anyway. I’m not going to stop though!

Can evil come at your while you are sleeping, or in your ‘wake-up twilight’? When I’m able to get some Holy Water, I’m going to put some on my pillow. My rosaries that I use at night at bedtime are blessed.

Evil has no time … it happens with me. Evil visits my dreams too sometimes but it haven’t for few months. I remember a night that i couldn’t sleep until 2-3 hours after going to bed and many evil thoughts came to my mind. I felt in misery… I even felt that im abandoned and that God isn’t hearing my petitions and prayers .Well, just keep praying and whenever you can’t sleep invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary as a mother and advocate and recite 3 Hail Mary devoutly and pray to your guardian angel. It works for me.

God bless you.

Hi Christina

Demons/evil spirits seem to be able to sense when we are growing closer to the Lord and they do not like it, at all. They will try to scare you, almost as if they are saying ‘if you ease up on your prayer life we will back off, if you don’t there is worse to come’. It is nothing less than intimidation. It is also a bluff. The devil and his demons, though powerful, are not as powerful as they would have you believe. They are creatures and as such are subject to God.

Do not be afraid. Continue with your prayer and redouble it. You are on the right road if you are worrying the demons. At night in bed pray the Rosary, The Guardian Angel and Holy Michael Archangel prayer. Invoke the Saints, especially St Pio, St Teresa of Avila, St Gemma Galgani and Blessed Pope John Paul II and of course Our Lady. Cover yourself with the Precious Blood of Jesus.

Sprinkle some holy water in your bedroom and place a crucifix above your bed. Do not be afraid. The above Saints suffered terribly at the hands of Satan and his demons but kept up the good fight, trusting always in God.

Blessed be God.

hi OK-well- what about electrical cords nearby-or electrical blanket? such as computers etc? these can cause or disturb sleep in sensitive persons …so as a google search-might suggest-these cause a bit of a influence on the biological person, as we are human and biological–hormones at play-you see? as i remember-electrical cords have a direct bearing on the innward natural clock, which every one has…so sleep disturbance results (swedish research)-may or may not be part of dreams—but, on the other topic given by this thread/that issue of angels? i should get hammer-ed- here as complaint with disagreement: nevertheless, let me make comment to counter propose the advice here on the forum(how dare you…they might respond)- for you to reconsider the angel belief-perhaps, if only to put in on the back burner for a while-that of traditional views via holy water-reconsider for the moment-meaning to take a break from any connection with an angel-sorry about that -of course-in my defense-angels wear white wings and bats wings-(how do you immediately discern the difference?) …of course make up your own mind…
again in my defense-would i be so prideful to think that it possible that satan would take interest in me-being poor and broke most of the time?-seems he might be the architect with plans …greater plans/ he might target some politician who has some power…No i am not that important in the course of human history; My pride projects on buggy men in the corner…my pride allows me to live a sad life…i should depend on the sacraments-to confess my pride…my pride is a blaming spirit and likes to blame without seeing capacity for my own evil…this is my confession…and these are my thoughts on the resolve of nightmares (which is your level of concern, and inquiry of evil, right?)

I do not think the devil has any part in this because you say it is in your dreams that it comes. I think you need to forget about them (your dreams) and do not let them disturb you. Try not to see your dreams in giving you this interpretation. If the devil wants to disturb you while you are trying to sleep it will usually come under the disguised illusion of unwarranted and unrealistic fears which he will try to impress you with at least before you hit dreamland. It is common though it is not taught often that the devil may give you this sense of fear so that you may think it is coming from you. To defeat such fears is quite easy for the devil cannot like anyone who tells another person what he is up to. When certain fears come to you and you cannot fight it on your own than it is very good to tell another soul about it. If it is from the devil he will eventually give up because you are giving away his secret. The devil hates group therapy. However if you are only partially asleep than yes the devil can intervene and give you these unrealistic and unwarranted fears so that you may think it is you. Since you say you are partially asleep this can happen. Again if you are going through with this try telling someone about it as soon as it hits you. If it is the devil he will not stick around. However if these same dreams persist than you have another problem which is more physical in nature and is causing these disturbances in you. We can’t always blame the devil for physical disturbances that are occurring in us. In this case go see a doctor.

I’m going to second the advice that you go see your doctor about your sleep. Could be a simple as a diet change giving your tummy time to digest before you go to bed. There are many who actually diagnose sleep problems. It isn’t just a simple answer. I’ve had sleep studies done. You get hooked up to ekgs and ecgs and get to sleep while folks monitor all these machines and then you go back to talk with the doc in charge of the sleep lab about what they find out. I’ve got RLS which can disturb your sleep pretty good and take a medication for it. I also snore and got to learn good sleep habits. It really sounds silly to some having your sleep studied, but it helped me a lot. Go to the doctor.

P.S. If you really think you may be under attack from things demonic, eliminating natural causes is important because that must be done before supernatural causes can be confirmed. It is a process.

I appreciate the replies. Let me say that up front.

I have no reason or need to believe that I need to see a doctor based on the last few nights of sleep disturbances. While I cannot give complete history or current events of my spiritual life, I have good reasons to believe that *if *this is possible, it is likely to be true that it is from the evil side of life. If it is not possible, then I’m just enduring a short, temporary phase of bad dreams. Being 45 years old (almost) and having never had 3 nights TOTAL in my life like this, having 3 in a row is what concerns me. I am trying to learn if sleep is a vulnerable time, and how to be less vulnerable at those times. I am not interpreting dreams, let’s be clear on that. I am also not concerned about ‘electrical’ interference; while I’m not arguing that that type of thing can be true, it is not in my case. The only thing that is different (not diet, circumstances, anything like that) is my spiritual life and prayer life.

I don’t think it is prideful to believe that the devil wants to tempt us, and assault us. He does that every day, doesn’t it? He hates us, he hates God. God loves us, and we love Him. I am important to God, I am special to Him. He created us that way.

I will, as I said, be using Holy Water in the bedroom, as well as a blessed Crucifix. Prayers will be stronger and more frequent, especially at bedtime and upon awakening.

Charbel and Spiritus, thank you for your suggestions, and I will be using them.

Don’t you guys know that when you become more close to God and pray more , the devil tries to disturb you more especially when you’re about to sleep?
The devil hates everyone and tries to make every person fall into sin so what’s happening with her could be very normal … the doctor doesn’t always have the remedy. I am not denying that sometimes it could be something about the diet or psychology related but you can’t also deny that the devil is everywhere trying to disturb everyone especially the ones closer to God.

Hi Christina

I do believe there is a spiritual basis to what you are experiencing. As you know, in the Bible we read that angels often visited people in dreams e.g. Joseph. If this is the case for good angels then I have no reason to doubt that it must also be case for demons who are as we know, fallen angels. Although demons they retain their angelic nature. The devil, unlike God is not omnipresent. He can only be in one place at a time, although he can move at phenomenal speed. It is unlikely that the devil would bother with a regular person, though not impossible. He has bigger fish to fry after all. He did assail some of the saints though e.g. St Pio, St Gemma Galgani, St Teresa of Avila, St John Vianney to name but a few. However demons can and do afflict ordinary people as they have been delegated to do by Satan.

Satan is aware of when we are growing closer to God and he hates it. The more we grow in holiness, the more we seem to be ‘on his radar’ so to speak.

Do not be afraid. St Teresa of Avila was a tremendous advocate of the use of holy water in such instances. Just saying the names of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and calling on Holy Michael the Archangel and the saints will see you right. You are a child of God and as such enjoy His protection.

Thank you. While I’m not saying THE devil is in my room, it could be through his orders; not to attack specifically ChristinaXX but anyone who is becoming closer to God, or whatever. I’m not going to rationalize evil and irrational thoughts or actions by them. But it could be him…we don’t know what God’s plan is for us, or how big we figure into a plan, or how one small person can change the world.

I have good reason to think that this, if something besides just a couple nights of very unusual and new disturbances, could be from the dark side. In the past, when I was especially close to the Holy Spirit, I was challenged in a different way, but a very real and obvious way from the dark side. It was easy to see then. This time, I’m not sure, but want to be prepared.

I’m not afraid. I know God is on my side, our side.

I’m not saying I, or anything, needs an exorcism. Let’s not get carried away (to other posts, not those quoted above).

God bless each of you and thank you for your response and concern.
Peace,

I am not saying that I do not believe evil isn’t capable of coming at you in your dreams because I think it could be possible. However, perhaps when you pray more before bed it awakens something in your subconscious and it affects your dreams in a way that doesn’t mean anything other than you are having bad dreams because it is disturbing them. After all they say our dreams are our subconscious talking to us right? Maybe you should pray at dinner time and not right before you go to bed. Also watch what you are eating at dinnertime. Spicy foods and really flavorful foods can cause strange dreams. New medications can as well, and sometimes dreams like this can even signify a medical problem. Eliminate all of the possibilities before assuming the dreams are spiritual in nature, but don’t stop praying!

Thanks for the reply. However, one thing I won’t do is quit praying before sleep; I understand what you are saying, but that’s not up for compromise. My eating hasn’t changed, and I rarely eat spicy or flavorful foods in the evening (or even during the day). Thanks for thinking of me though, and I appreciate the time and thought you put into your answer. 🙂

It is vitally important to know that the devil needs permission to “assault” others. If God gives this permission it is because He sees in you this possibility to know what to do when the devil arrives or He is using the devil as a means to awaken you into a better perspective of obtaining courage. The devil is not as free as you think he is. The devil is also under the domain of God and if you really think about it, God uses the devil to help us to overcome our own fears and here God may be teaching you not to be afraid. If one is afraid of the devil this same devil becomes a great giant but if you will only learn to despise the devil, he only becomes a dwarf. The devil uses a lot of fear to get at faithful Christians. Yet you must understand this fear that he gives is an illusion yet it is a fantastic illusion. The actual truth is the devil is more afraid of you than you are of him. He is actually a coward because he only decides to pick on people one on one. He hates a crowd so to defeat this coward is very easy. You just reveal to someone what he is up to.

You know in AA someone who is thinking of a drink just calls up someone and this temptation for a drink soon loses its power. If people will only do that when any temptation will come, the big temptations will lose all their power! I don’t mean about these common venial sins we commit we need to address our temptations but when something major as these fears that come our way we need to speak up. And I sense God is using these opportunities for us not to turn to fear but to turn this fear around so that we make the devil tremble. And remember that this same devil does tremble with fear inside him for he is without God and that he hides this truth from us is incredible but it is only an illusion that he gives that he is control of himself.

If you believe this is from the devil then God might be giving this for you to grow to become less afraid, to become more of a courageous Christian. There is nothing the devil can do to you unless you give him permission for. Learn to kick back!

Temptations and disturbing thoughts are allowed by God so we show him our love and dedication by being faithful to him. That is almost the whole point of the story of Job in the Old Testament.

Yes the devil does do these things and he is on no particular time table but does them at random according to permission from God. It is another form of suffering. So it is not indicating that there is something going wrong with our relationship with God.

Now another person was bothered in this way and this is what he did.

“…Dreams of demons holding me down while i slept and trying to strangle me. Horrid stuff.”…“Also, i’ve never suffered from those terrifying dreams while i slept with me scapulars on. I have a green one and a blue/black St Michael one. They 're a bit grotty after never taking them off but i reckon its worth it.”

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

talk with your priest, I think it’s important. there is also the posibility that there is nothing supernatural going on, just some days with nightmares, there is a first time for lots of stuff, and you could be fueling the problem by worrying too much, so i suggest you look for someone who could help you, like a good Priest.

Thank you for your replies. As mentioned, I am not so much ‘fearful’ of the evil, as I was bothered by this horrific dream that caused me great distress. I KNOW it’s just a dream. I’m not scared, as I have God on my side. But who enjoys getting these types of feelings, especially if it can be avoided? I’m not worried; just curious about it, considering the timing. It could just be nightmares, and a coincidental timing…or my steps will take care of it if it’s something else.

God bless each of you, and peaceful dreams; good night

I do wear my blessed medals of the Miraculous Medal, Blessed Mother Teresa and St. Augustine, and usually sleep with my Rosary near my pillow, or if I fall asleep, in hand.

If these continue to disturb my sleep and such, I will seek to visit with my priest about it. After just a few nights, I don’t know that it’s necessary, but I won’t hesitate to do so if needed.
