For may years, our parish has had Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays from 11 AM to 4PM and we have Benediction at closing. At the 3 o’clock hour, we recite aloud a Divine Mercy Chaplet. I know Adoration is for adoring silently and I wonder if it is disrespectful in any way… to the other adorers who may not wish to recite the Chaplet or to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament while it is esposed. The lady who used to lead it every week is now ill and I have been asked to lead it in her place .I enjoy doing it and those who pray it seem to love it, but this thought keeps nagging me: Is it permissible or is there a Church rule against the laity praying a devotion aloud during Adoration. Thank you.

No rule against it as far as I know.

Anyone who would resent or be disturbed by people praying aloud in a church (sheesh, as if that’s not something that is* supposed* to happen in a church!) obviously would never go to Mass now, would they?

I would like to get a definitive answer myself, since I understand that Adoration gains a lot of graces for the suffering souls in Purgatory, but I’d like to also do some of those special prayers aloud if allowed:confused:

Redemptionis Sacramentum: [137.] Exposition of the Most Holy Eucharist must always be carried out in accordance with the prescriptions of the liturgical books. Before the Most Holy Sacrament either reserved or exposed, the praying of the Rosary, which is admirable “in its simplicity and even its profundity”, is not to be excluded either. Even so, especially if there is Exposition, the character of this kind of prayer as a contemplation of the mystery of the life of Christ the Redeemer and the Almighty Father’s design of salvation should be emphasized, especially by making use of readings taken from Sacred Scripture.

I would suggest that the Divine Mercy Chaplet would also be equally respectful with the Rosary. However, if this is a problem for you, mention it to the priests. Let him know that you do not object but wonder it others do. We have a custom of saying the Rosary before the daily Mass. We start the Rosary early enough that all will have at least 10 minutes of personal prayer before the start of the Mass. God Bless

Our parish allows group vocal prayers during adoration if they are scheduled or pre-arranged beforehand with the parish office. Unscheduled personal prayers spoken aloud while others are silently praying are discouraged. Among other vocal prayers, we have Rosary before Thursday night Mass, Liturgy of the Hours on Saturday morning before Mass, and music for two hours on Wednesday evenings. We have perpetual adoration of the blessed sacrament, 24/7.

Thank you for your replies. I now know what I should do: I will discuss it with my Pastor and if he says it is fine, I will continue; if he says he doesn’t think I should do it I will discontinue leading it and I will ask him how to set up another way for the Divine Mercy Chaplet to be prayed publicly. It is much loved by the people who appreciate it and want to pray it together. Of course, I will pray about it before I approach him. Thank you again

“Jesus, I trust in you.”

We have a Divine Mercy Hour, Tuesday night, at our Church. The Most Blessed Eucharist is exposed, we recite the evening Hours of the Liturgy and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. We also collect “Prayer Cards” that are distributed in the Church and a box to collect them. We read the cards and offer our prayers. Benediction follows the service.

Just two weeks ago our parish began a new tradition on Friday nights in the sanctuary. First a recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, followed by the Rosary, followed by Holy Mass, followed by a Benediction. I’m looking forward to going tonight with my wife.

In our missalettes in the Church it states that it is allowed, but it doesn’t state the circumstances. (when or what). If you have any doubt ask your parish priest.

Common sense would tell me that if you arrived at adoration with a friend, and there were one or two other people present praying silently, it would not be appropriate for you and your friend to start praying the Rosary aloud.

However, if these things are planned in advance and a group is going to do it with the approval of your pastor, then it seems appropriate.
