I usually skip the hymn (still not clear if that’s allowed). But lately I’ve been wanting to include the hymn in my private recitation. Problem is I’m usually not familiar with how the hymns go, and I don’t know which ones are allowed and not allowed.

For those of you who pray the Divine Office, are there some authorized hymns that you just stick with (say four or five hymns that you say whichever hour)? Can you guys recommend any - preferably traditional and dignified (not hokey ones:D).

Hi mikee: I pray the Divine Office as a Discalced Carmelite Secular and privately I recite the hymns most often the same ones. I think that there are many different ways that the Divine Office can be prayed but I might be incorrect about that, but have heard that it is.

I have a one volume book and it says what hymns one sings or recites and there is a guide book one can get for $2 bucks at most Catholic book stores that I use as it has the order of Prays that are said each day. hope that helps some.

The Hymns in the English Breviaries are not the ones that our in the official Latin ones, though replacing the hymns is lawful for the LOTH.

Here is a hymnal with most of the Latin hymns translated into English and set to Chant

I usually don’t know how the hymns go either, but I will attempt my own interpretation so to speak. Sometimes I can find the hymn on iTunes so I can hear how it sounds. Note also that it is acceptable to substitute another song from the same section shown in the book, and I will do that sometimes as well.
