Greetings, all,

Can someone tell me something about the Divine Word Missionaries? Our pastor is on vacation, and we had a Divine Word Missionary celebrate Mass for us yesterday. (Very reverent and respectfully, I might add).

This is an order with which I am not familiar. Anyone out there with information/experieces?

Blessings,

I briefly studied with the SVDs.

The SVDs were founded by Saint Arnold Jansen, a diocesan priest from Germany who founded the order in the Netherlands during the anti-Catholic kulturcamp. The only other canonized saint is the first SVD missionary to China St Joseph Freinademetz, a great man with a terrible name.

The are also one of the only orders (the only major order I believe…with over a thousand members) which has increased in vocations since Vatican II. This is due mainly to the emphasis on foreign missions and the influex of Vietnamese and Sudanese seminarians in the Chicago provence. Interestingly the SVDs were also the first order to ordain African Americans and today still draws much support from African Americans and men from the Caribbean.

If you have any other questions please feel free to message me.

Were Africans not ordained only in the US, or throughout the world?

Yes, the SVDs were the first congregation to accept and ordain black americans. i know this because i am an SVD seminarian. we have a very strong emphasis on internationality and that is why, we accept candidates regardless of their skin color and culture, as long as they are catholics who really wanted to pursue their vocations as missionaries. for now, we are the first congregation in the church to have a Filipino Superior General (worldwide leader) in the person of Fr. Tony Pernia, SVD. He is now in his second term.

in the Catholic news forums are links to articles about the SDV priest recenly killed in the Philippines, and a story of his short life, with pictures. very touching.
