Divorce Bomb Dropped

My sister’s husband just told her he wanted a divorce tonight completely out of the blue. She’s a stay-at-home mom of little ones. They live in a very expensive area on the opposite side of the country from family. There is no way she will be able to afford to live there once they are divorced. It’s not remotely possible. He’s refusing to move. He’s refusing counseling. Please pray for them. I’m devastated for them. My sister doesn’t even know what to do.

She told me that the first thing she was going to do today was call a lawyer. I figure that she will have to wind up going to court because she said it isn’t remotely feasible for her to afford the cost of living where she is now. If she moved back across the country where we are- she would 100% have a place for her and the kids to live rent/mortgage free as well as free child care. She has a support system here with us but not where she is now.

Also- thank you to everyone who is praying. This has devastated her- and I’m literally sick to my stomach for her and the kids.

PS. If in the marriage there isn’t abuse, addiction or an other person, it is worth to try to save it. I was in a very dark place with my own marriage few years ago and I am very very happy that we didn’t give up and found a way out of the storm together as a couple and a family. Praying for you all.

Father please find a way for this woman to find peace with her live. If possible may this man find his way back to Christ and his wife. May he remain with her. May they walk strong in your word. In your name, Jesus amen!

Offer to fly to watch the kids while sister goes to save her marriage. She can attend https://www.helpourmarriage.org/ with her husband.

In parallel, she needs to understand her rights and have a trusted person knowledgeable about the law (A quality family lawyer) to protect her interests since she can’t ‘stop’ her husband from initiating a no-fault divorce

Ask her to try one last ditch attempt before signing the papers.
Ask her to consider attending Retrouvaille. It’s a Catholic marriage intensive specifically designed for people like her. Many of the couples who attend are already separated, some are even divorced. There are chapters all over the U. S.

Offer to watch her kids. Offer to pay for it. It’s one weekend. It’s not therapy; you don’t have to share with any strangers or counselors. All faiths/no faith equally welcomed and benefit.
Many thousands of marriages have been saved. It saved mine; in a situation much worse than you’ve described here.
