I was married for 14 years to a man with Aspergers syndrome. We married 44 years ago, when Aspergers was not recognised or diagnosed, as sufferers are highly intelligent, but with social dysfunction, and Autism at that time was thought to be only the alienated people who were totally withdrawn.

I was able to get an annulment, which took 11 months. This was done 3 years ago.

I have had his mental condition explained to me in laymen’s terms as comparing computer operating systems. Most of us a Microsoft Windows - he is Android - not a misfunctioning Windows programme, but a totally different operating system. He honestly cannot see that how he acts is wrong in any way. It is not that he knows he is being a weirdo or bastard, to him he is logical and correct in all things. A bit like Temperance Brennan in Bones on TV.

I have seen happily married Aspergers people - diagnosed early and young, taught intensively, and willing to take guidance from their spouses as to whether their actions are correct. It can be hard on the spouse, but it can work, IF the Aspy is not a nasty type as well - as someone said above, mentally ill can be nice, or really nasty, as can normal people.
