Do abortion and contraception control the world population?

I’ve seen plague and starvation victims. If you are serious about culling population, a rubber seems a lot more humane than either. I’ll concede on the abortion issue, given the nature of this site.
It is a false premise that people are starving due to overpopulation. That is simply not the case. The United States alone has the ability to grow enough food to feed every human being on the planet. There is more food available than we can eat. The reason there is starvation in certain parts of the globe is due to politics, tribal/ethnic conflicts and their effect on the distribution of food.
I suggest that you (and everyone else) read “Population Control” By Steven W. Mosher. :hmmm:

I didn’t give a reason for starvation. Another poster said disease and starvation are a good way of keeping population numbers down – an insanely brutal contention. I disagreed and said that condoms were a better choice than either starvation or plague for population control.

While geometrically that may be true, try living your life in a 4 ft^2 box. The world may be large, but the inhabitable space and resources necessary for life are not infinite.

Well, fine! We’ll just move them from Rhode Island to Texas. Problem solved.

what? A myth? Studies have shown that populations of organisms can quickly over populate if the conditions are right. Humans just have longer life-spans that the things like bacteria or fruit flies that are studied, but on a biological level all populations are the same.
Are you comparing human beings to a bacteria and fruit flies? Perhaps I am missing something, but I don’t see the equality there either biologically or spiritually. We, as “oranisms”, reproduce completely differently and live completely differently cycles of time with different cycles of being able to reproduce. The highest number of children born to one woman is 69. Needless to say, the average is MUCH, MUCH lower! Bacteria and fruit flies are capable of reproducing almost from the moment of “birth”. They multiply in the hundreds to millions in a very short period of time. Plus, you have to define “overpopulation”. It can’t just be an arbitrary number. While humans live much longer than fruit flies, our period of fertility (for women) is relatively short and we can produce our own food, nurture our young, create our own shelter, order our societies and treat our own illnesses.

If you factor in humans killing humans in war, homicide and natural disasters, I think the idea of the planet becoming over populated is overblown. As far as natural disasters are concerned, I don’t think that God creates/causes them to “cull” (or punish) the population. (I suspect that was an unfortunate choice of words and probably not intended the way it appeared) I can’t know for sure, but I believe that God simply allows nature to happen.

Id hate to admit it but NFP worked for me for nearly 2 years…BEFORE getting married. Yes, I did have pre-marital sex, but the notion that NFP does not work is hog wash…you just have to know your body and your parnters cycle very well and WORK TOGETHER. 2 years…no babies…then i gave in one day and BAM I got pregnant!

And why wouldn’t it work? The deer and the raccoon have their fertile times; we have ours.

[Oh Im just stating that Ive heard all over the place ESPECIALLY in the catholic community that NFP DOES NOT WORK. I was preassured to tie my tubes. I was always givent the quote “God will help you if you help yourself” in spanish actually. Now I will be going tomorrow to see if i can get them reversed.
