Another Life lasted from 1981 to 1984 and was produced by Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network. What should Catholics think of the serial? Was Mother Angelica aware of the show’s existence? I wonder if Another Life was sanctioned by the Screen Actors Guild.

I suspect Mother Angelica had many, many more important things to do with her time than be aware of soap operas made by Pat Robertson.

You really should speak to your priest about discerning if something is appropriate for Catholics

No soap operas are appropriate viewing for anyone, Catholic or non-Catholic, except of course “Guiding Light,” which I watched in the 1970’s when I was briefly unemployed.

You should still discuss this with your priest. It seems to be an ongoing issue.

Yes, I watched it and was disappointed when it ended. It was a soap opera only in the sense that it was a continuation of a story - there was nothing inappropriate about it. The families prayed, no implied sex or such. I can’t remember the story lines, but it was about a central family and the life experiences that arose.

Hey now, my mom used to love her old-school “Edge of Night” and “Secret Storm” that she watched with Grandma. And when “General Hospital” was huge, she and her friend would watch it with me.

Edge and GH were more like whodunnits a lot of the time, not just boring romance gunk. GH got really out there with international Bond-style villains for a while.

Oh yeah. Was it Grant that had an evil twin who was really a Russian spy who was going to marry Celia Quartermaine? I don’t remember how it turned out but the suspense had me on the edge of my seat for a long while.

@MrZoom these shows seem to be one of South Korea’s major exports. I don’t know why the Japanese can’t make these sorts of shows, but the evidence is that they can’t.

My big memory is the guy who was going to freeze the entire world with some machine if Luke and Laura didn’t stop him. That was true Josie and the Pussycats territory there.

My grandmother loved her “stories”. I used to watch The Doctors, All My Children, and Another World with her. In the early 80s, I was all about General Hosptial

Unfortunately, reality today is much worse than any contrived scheme concocted in the soaps, and some people’s personal lives are more messed up than those of any soap opera characters.

like to watch really old ones on YouTube sometimes just to remember what the world looked like then
I do to! I also watched Guiding Light in the early 90s, and there was a great storyline 'Goodbye My Friend". I pulled that up on YouTube, and cried all over again!

Oh, and when Angie and Jessie were reunited on AMC. Another tearjerker!

Was it “Days of our Lives” or “One Life To Live” that went super koko in the 80’s where there were people from space or time travelers or what not?

I think that was One Life to Live where they sent characters back to 1968 to revisit the Vietnam era. I didn’t watch that soap, GH was about all of that soap stuff I could take and I could only keep up the watching for about 3 years before my own life got too busy to be plotzing in front of TV every day at 3 pm.
