Do Atheists honestly disbelieve in God?

It’s always dicey when we try to discern what people “really” believe. Their manner might suggest to us that they aren’t really easy in conscience with what they tell us that they believe; we might suspect their insouciance is cover for a deep disquietude. That people are capable of persuading themselves that they can get along perfectly well without God, and all that that entails, is clear.

St. Pio had a penitent worriedly tell him about a friend or relative who said that he didn’t believe in Hell. The saint shook his head & said “He will when he gets there.”

I am sure Mr. Hitchens has.
