ok I get a newsletter called Weird NJ—I am from NJ—and they have
some WAY-OUT-THERE stuff in the newsletters from time to time. So
this month’s is all about Hollow Earth theory and I am just skimming
thru it and I find some strange christian take on it and this quote
(notice what I have highlighted with *** ):

<<< Most Christians know about Issac of the Old Testament. He
had 12 sons. His name was then changed to Israel. Therefore, we
have the 12 tribes of Israel. *** Much of mankind is
descended from the tribes of Judah or Joseph. *** However, the
present location of the descendents of the other 10 sons, or tribes,
are unknown to us. They have then, become known as the 10 Lost
Tribes. >>>

now what I want to know is this—how many christian groups believe
this (what is highlighted above with *** )? where does this preposterous idea
come from? Do Catholics believe this?

I can trace my family tree back to the 1200’s and I have
no Jewish contributors at all, and surely if ‘MUCH of mankind’ comes
from these 2 tribes there would be more contributions in modern times
when there are so many more people involved?

why do people believe this? That the whole human race comes from 2
ancient Jewish tribes? What about all the thousands of humans on the
earth before Israel and since? what is such a big deal with Israel?
Can any of this so-called ancestry actually be proven by DNA or other
science? Are there any statistics available that can put a realisitic
number on the amount of people alive today who have descended from
these tribes?

and I do not want to be misunderstood as anti-semitic, if you are
Jewish-fine! enjoy your heritage! But if you are not–why would you
want to force the issue by making something like this up?

Sounds like a tabloid newspaper. I’d stay away from it.

The Catholic Church teaches that all mankind descends from a single pair of parents, whom Genesis gives the symbolic names of Adam and Eve; these names are symbolic because they tell about the historical figures: Adam means man, because God created him as the head or father of mankind, and Eve means mother of the living, because God created her as the source or mother of mankind.

You can trace every single line of your family back to the 13th century. I doubt that very much, sorry. The lost tribes were scattered far longer ago than the 13th century. You’d have to go back a lot further than that to have any idea - like a thousand years further back in history.

There is no Catholic doctrine addressing what you have highlighted.

But if the tribes were not killed off - and there is no reason to think they were - then it is likely that they are scattered throughout a lot of family trees on earth like leaven in bread.

Actually, the newsletter is wrong. He only had two sons: Esau and Jacob.

Jacob, however, had 12 sons.

In any case, that theory presented is not Catholic teaching.

My father and step-mother joined the Genographic Project by National Geographic. If memory serves, this project is actually out to prove this very thing. Its very cool.

Regardless, trust in God…

(I did not say ‘every single line’ of my family–but on my father’s surname side, yes I can. I did not have to do the work myself however because he was related to European royalty and much of it is a matter of record. It is unbroken back to 1640 when the first ancestor came to America, and then the semi-royal bits take it up in England and Germany. My mother’s may go back as far, but her information is about 300 pages in French and I can’t read it. But those only represent two surnames–no where near the entire line. The point was that it seems that it would be easier to find a particular ethnic heritage among the numbers if it was there in more modern times as there are more chances.)

thank you for your answers so far. I just never realized that some Christian groups out there really believe that ‘much of mankind’ can be traced back to two small Middle Eastern tribes that started out so numerically insignificant (and without the benefit of a global deluge to wipe out all other human lineages as in the case of Noah and his sons)! And I did see that not only was the spelling of Isaac wrong, but it was his son Jacob who had the 12 sons and had his name changed to Israel–I just figured the writer made a mistake.

wow I can’t believe how screwed up things have gotten outside of the Church.

I can trace mine back to European Royalty too. That and $4 will get me a cup-a-joe at Starbucks. Even with all the stuff available on the genealogy of the European Royal houses, you still don’t know much - they didn’t track everyone, especially the ladies. If your royal house is from Spain or ever had a Spanish connection- I can nearly guarantee that there is Jewish blood involved: the conversos married into nearly every noble house in Spain in the 15th & 16th century. The problem is that the information is not really that complete or very old and the diaspora is SO long ago - long before any records were kept on a medium that would last. (We’re not talking Egyptian pharaohs writing their ancestors in stone after all.) And how would you know from names on a paper if they were Jewish? Names are a very very fluid things - they change at the drop of the hat.

I think that if the diaspora went west and north, enough time has passed that there is a very good chance that a lot of Europeans have some trace of Jewish ancestry. The Church has no position on it, but the idea is not that far fetched.

I have no idea what this ^ means.

10 tribes were lost in the diaspora, not that that makes much difference to your point.

On a vaguely related note - just to show how difficult to know for sure what genealogy means - William the Conquerer was more Norse than French or Norman.

Actually Scripture does not teach that all mankind descend from Jacob but that the Jews descend from Jacob. After all, Jacob and all of his people went to Egypt and the Egyptians were not related to the Jews except by Noah.

Two things:

  • The name is I-s-a-a-c
  • Jacob had 12 sons, Isaac had two.
    The author appears to be:
  • illiterate
  • ignorant
  • too lazy to bother with making sure of the facts
Don’t waste your time on such stupidity - you’ll learn more from watching paint dry.

Not likely ! Catholics can be pretty thick at times - but not that thick

An immense quantity of the stuff on the Net is, in the words of C.S. Lewis, “a cataract of nonsense”. Rubbish is made up about the Bible, because the Bible is noticeably important for a lot of people. If the Constitution were as important, there would be sites telling us about the “PROOF” that the Founding Fathers were aliens whose coming had been prophesied in the OT. It’s not - so, the irresponsible myth-making, brainless idiocy, & downright lunacy are devoted to the Bible instead.

Jacob lived some 4000 years ago. If you traced your ancestry back 4000 years it would span some 150 generations; you would identify some 2 to the 150 power ancestors, something on the order of 10 with 50 zeros after it.

Of course this far exceeds the population of that time; the same ancestor would head many lines. It would not be surprising if Jacob headed several of them.

…some of the errors have been pointed out… here’s a little tidbit: ever notice how close packed Jewish communities are? How many non-Jews have you noticed working along side Jews? How many multi-cultural Jewish communities do you know?

While it is true that non-religious/orthodox Jews might have inter-married with various people from all over the world… how different is that from Orientals, Arabs, Australians, English, North Americans, Latin Americans… I’m originally from the Dominican Republic; as a toddler I was called “pelo de oro” due to my blonde hair… the gene pool on that tiny island is composed of the aborigines, Spaniards, English, French, and Africans… as a child I can recall knowing of Chinese, Arabs and Gringos (slang for North Americans) living in the neighborhoods I frequented (lots of “primos” all over the place)…

So, are there Jewish roots throughout the world? Yeah!

Are all/most modern human being direct descendants of some Jewish ancestry? :hmmm:

…doing the math… 🤓 :banghead: 🍿

…just did the math… :nope:

Maran atha!

In college I had a Jewish classmate who had red hair. A couple of blondJews came through my RCIA program a few years back.
