Do Catholics consider themselves to be Christians?

I have been talking with a friend who was brought up Catholic. When I say that she is a Christian she is offended and says Catholics were offended by being called Christian? While I was not brought up Catholic, I was brought up to believe that anyone who believed in Christ was a Christian and that different Christians churches had different beliefs about how and when a person was baptized a Christian therefore Catholics were Christian.

I am confused. Would you please explain to me why she said, " She was Catholic, she was not Christian."
