Do Catholics really worship Mary and the saints?

Hello,

Today at Mass, my pastor said that there exists three forms of worship in Catholic theology: latria (worship of God alone), hyperdulia (worship of the BVM), and dulia (worship of Saints). That sounds a bit weird. I’ve always heard that Catholics DON’T worship Mary or the Saints; but my pastor, as well as older Catholic books I’ve read, say we do. I’ve also heard that the meaning of worship is not always limited to what most people think it is (honoring a deity). Was my pastor correct? Additionally, if he was wrong, would that effect the sacraments he administers? Two weeks from now I’m being conditionally baptized, and I’m concerned that if my pastor said something that might be heretical, the baptism would be invalid.

Thanks and God bless,

Jack
