Do Catholics worship idols?

Hi, my name is josh and i am new. At work, a protestant and i were having religious discussion. He always seems to come out and start criticising Catholics. Well, he went on the other day to say that since we pray to Mary, angels, saints, religious objects, etc. that is the same as worshiping idiols This caused me become very upset and i almost told him to leave. I was shaken up and honestly can’t remember what i exactly said. Could you help me in what i should say and how i should act in this circumstance? Thanks alot and God bless
