I know that those who are interested in religious life cannot have student loans, but is this the same with men pursuing diocesan priesthood? Are there assistance programs for those discerning, or is it expected that the loans are cleared before entering into seminary?

This varies diocese to diocese. Some have repayment assistance programs, some don’t. Your best bet is to talk to someone from the diocese your interested in.

Religious candidates can work with Laboure Society or Mater Ecclesia for tuition assistance. I THINK they help diocesan vocations if student loans are a limiting factor as well… you’ll want to double check that though. Knight of Columbus also have program where they provide small stipends to seminarians. Depending on your situation, it may be enough to put a few extra dollars toward you loans, or it may not. I also don’t know the fine print of that program and how they may limit what you can do with it.
