Do I have to believe in the Brown Scapular in order to be a good Catholic?

Hello, I recently heard a nun extolling the benifits of wearing a brown scapular. I have been a catholic for about five years and have never heard of such promises before. Its hard for me to believe that by wearing a piece of brown cloth that it could make a difference of how long I may have to spend in purgatory ETC.
\My question is, do I have to believe this is true in order to be a good catholic??? If so I am afraid that I may have some serious doubts about my new faith.
