Do I have to tell my teacher this?

My mom once said that a good movie would be about people trapped on a ship. We were starting a short movie script in school and I used that idea for it. My mom was okay with it but I am now worried that it was stealing.
Do I have to tell my teacher, and maybe the people I told what my script was about, that its idea was from my mom?

No, your mom was stealing:
 
I mean assuming you wrote the actual detailed script, then you’re fine. “People trapped on a ship” is pretty broad. Don’t worry about it.
 
And even if your mother gave you some help, assuming she didn’t write the whole durn thing for you, you’re OK. Most artists and writers are at least a little influenced by others.
 
Yeah, “trapped on a ship” is more of a genre than it is a specific plot idea. Since you wrote the script yourself, you’re fine.

No, of course not. It’s only an idea- you wrote the script.🙂
 
It is still okay if she might have said that they are trapped with a murderer, right? That is what I wrote about and I don’t remember if she said that or not.

That sounds like it would be a really cool plot.
Anyway, writers get their ideas from everywhere. Your mother made a suggestion, but you developed the idea. The creativity is yours. You did not plagiarize somebody else’s work.
 
Anyone know the name of the movie about a ship flipping upside down? I watched it as a kid with my mom and loved it.

The poster asked SPECIFICALLY which movie involved a ship overturning. In your post, you gave Poseidon Adventure as an example of people trapped on a ship. That’s not ignoring your post.

If you’re going to get this upset about posting here on CAF, maybe you need to lurk more before responding.
