Hello, my husband and I have been married for some time. I am going through RCIA now and I want to be Catholic. I have never been legally married before. I did date a man of an eastern religion. At the time I dated him I was not religious. His father made us go to the temple and recite vows before some guy at the church. We recited them to please his father. We were never legally married. We didn’t sign papers or anything. Do I need to get this annulled?

Speak with your priest. He and the Tribunal have dealt with similar instances, they will help you sort this out.

Welcome!!

It sounds as though this would be something simple to resolve. My impression is that the Church wouldn’t view it as valid. But go to the tribunal and get it sorted. They’ll be able to tell you for sure.

Because sometimes I forget and use vague terms, the “Tribunal” is a group of people who are at the Diocese (sort of like Corporate Regional HQ). Their job and ministry is to review things related to marriage.
