Do I need to confess how I drive?

Wow…80 or so comments on this…I’m stunned…Perhaps I’ll say something different…

“give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”

There is always a Caesar. God doesn’t want you hurting yourself or others. Use your judgement. I doubt what you describe would put yourself or others in danger, but use your judgement…maybe if you are a very inexperienced driver your actions are questionable.

Something on the level of drunk driving is worth confessing.

As for speed limits…as far as I’m concerned that is often the dominion of Caesar. Often speed limits are…
  1. A way for a city or state to collect revenue.
  2. Illegally set too low. I’ve seen cities challenged and beat for setting speed limits too low.
  3. Dangerously low…if everybody goes 70 and the posted speed limit is 55, a few people will go 55 and cause accidents.

Reckless driving is a sin against the 5th Commandment. It is grave matter. Concerning minor violations of traffic laws that do not constitute reckless endangerment, they are venial sins.
The 5th Commandment is “Honor your mother and father”. I think you meant the 6th Commandment “You shall not kill”.

@GospelOfMatthew

yes you should confess them because your driving is endangering your self and other, what would be the state of your soul and of others, in case of an accident? the body is the temple of the Holy spirit and you where bought with a prize by Jesus ,your precious in god’s eyes and many souls depend on you if god has entrusted in your care, you are responsible for your soul and others, lest you say like cain am i your brothers keeper!

Sirach 32:19 Do nothing without deliberation, but when you have acted, do not regret it.
20 Do not go on a path full of hazards, and do not stumble at an obstacle twice.21 Do not be overconfident on a smooth road,22 and give good heed to your paths.23 Guard yourself in every act,
for this is the keeping of the commandments.24 The one who keeps the law preserves himself,
and the one who trusts the Lord will not suffer loss

1 Corinthians 6:12 12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

I will have to say a few more things. I just think it is important to use your own judgement and not be rigid in your thinking. For example, take a few hypothetical examples, and think about whether there is sin (i.e. danger to your life or others)

Person A: Sets his cruise control 8 mph over the speed limit driving cross country on a perfectly safe day. He remains at a speed similar to the flow of the rest of the traffic.

Person B: Gets boxed in by trucks to his right and left. Briefly speeds 15mph to get out of this situation in a reasonably quick but safe way.

Person C: Drives with 3 people in the car on a twisting two lane highway in very questionable weather conditions. A four lane highway was available, but the two lane highway might save 15 minutes drive time. Obeys all traffic laws and drives under the speed limit.

Person D: Obeys all traffic laws as he drive overnight to his destination while not having slept for 24 hours.

Where is the sin? I’d say C and D, and not A and B. However, person A and B are breaking the law. This is why I say use your judgement and don’t be rigid.

You went on a Catholic forum and are surprised to find Catholic numbering?

Or maybe I looked up “the 10 commandants” to refresh my memory on which one you were referring to, and the first result said that #5 was “honor thy mother and father” instead of “thou shalt not kill”. I’m catholic myself - confirmed and everything - and I honestly didn’t know before now that the commandants were numbered differently depending on denomination.
