Do Lutherans hold an Ash wed. service similar to the Catholics or at all?

My parents are attending a Lutheran Church and they have an Ash Weds. service. I am not sure how it goes or if it is similar to the Catholic service, but from what I have heard their particular church is fairly strict.

We will hold an Ash Wednesday service with the imposition of ashes. I have been attending (or presiding at) Lutheran Ash Wednesday services for at least 25 years.

It depends on the synod the Lutheran church belongs to. Mine belongs to probably the most conservative synod in the U.S. and we hold Ash Wed. services to mark the beginning of Lent and we also have weekly Wed. Lenten services. Last year our new pastor began using ashes, same tradition as the Catholic tradition, which was nice, IMHO.

As a member of the most liberal branch of the Lutheran Church, I can answer the same way as Skigirl. We have had Ash Wednesday services since I was a child. Luther’s disputes with the Catholic Church did not involve the liturgical calendar or the celebrations of the church festivals.

As do the Methodists and Presbyterians. It’s not as large of a service as the Lutherans and Catholics hold. Nor is Lent as commonly practiced. 😦

I am LCMS Lutheran, yes we had Ash Wednesday service as well as weeklly Lent services. We will also have a Maunday Thursday, Good Friday and of course the Easter service during Holy Week.👍

That’s interesting…I was raised Methodist and we never had Ash Wed. services, at least not that I remember. I found that to be new when I became a Lutheran after my marraige. I know they have Ash Wed. and Lenten services.

The Luthern Church I belong to as always included an Ash wednesday service. Some Churches do not include the use of ashes during the liturgy though the custom is increasing.
