Trying to get a short, concise answer to what should be a simple question.

Does the Catholic Church officially teach that the God of Islam is the same God as Christians/Jews ? (he says it is in the Catholic Catechism)

I’m following a discussion where a (pre-trib rapture) evangelical Christian is making a claim that the CC is will be involved in a one world religion in the end times and the current attempts of ecumenism with other faiths is a clear indication.

(I’m afraid the more complicated the answer the more credibility would be lost in discussion)

And a quick follow up question;

Does the Catholic Church teach that a good Muslim can be saved (go to heaven) by being a good Muslim?

And if yes…why the great commission…?

thx

The relevant documents are from Vatican II:

Lumen Gentium no. 16 says “the Moslems . . . profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God . . .”

Nostra Aetate no. 3 says “The Church has … a high regard for the Muslims. They worship God, who is one, living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth,[1] who has also spoken to men. . . . Although not acknowledging him as God, they worship Jesus as a prophet . . .”

These statements must of course be understood in light of Sacred Tradition and past magisterial teaching, which utterly rules out and condemns indifferentism. All it’s saying is that they worship the true God. Not that their religion is true. There’s a difference. You can worship the wrong god, or you can worship the right God wrongly.

As to non-Catholics being saved, yes it’s possible but far from certain in any given case, and without all the helps of the Church, much harder. Which is one reason we follow the Great Commission. Another reason is, we want people to know Jesus and all that he revealed.

  1. Maybe, see post #3
  2. Because not being Catholic makes it harder to become holy.

All those links are from the AAA forum that anyone can find using the simple search engine there.

If Allah is a name for God, what’s wrong with Catholics praying to him?…/QUOTE]

Nothing is wrong…
Why? Because Allah is the Arabic word for God, not merely the Muslim word for God and so is used by the Melkites (one of the oldest Christian communities in the world and hundreds of years older than Islam).

So why in heaven’s name should we let the Muslims pretend that Allah is THEIR name for God: it’s history as a Christian word is MUCH longer.

At a time when Arab Christians are suffering intense persecution we should help support their identity whenever and wherever we can.

OK, where is it in the Catechism then? It would be helpful to find out what he is misinterpreting so as to correct him.

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day."330

Yes, although it’s a different view of God compared to Jews and Christians. The Muslim view is that Christ was a prophet, and as such they use (pbuh = peace be upon him) when talking about him, but they don’t believe in the Trinity.
