Do non-Catholic denoms have vows of celibacy??

I think many evangelical denominations discourage celibacy als due to misinterpretation of 1 Timothy 4:3 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. (This is the New International Version, I do not know if it is reliable or anything, but it seems to match the German translation in the bible that is used for liturgical purposes here).

Im evangelical and we leave it up to that person and God. As someone said celibacy is a gift and very few have it.

If you do have the gift then great USE it.

If you dont then it is perfectly fine to get married.

That is what the bible says and so Im fine with either way.

I have never had a minister that is not married and they do a fine job even while being married
Beside if a person is following God’s Will then ALL will work out for them. whichever road they follow.

Right…but that means there should be people who do “renounce” marriage. So I was wondering where are these groups in other Christian denominations. It seems to me that Evangelicals, from what I am reading here, either teach contrary or avoid the issue altogether.

Are anglicans, lutherans and reformed communities not protestant?

I believe they are more Catholic than they are Protestant. I think of Pentecostals and Baptists and such to be real Protestants. Anglicans, Lutherans and such adhere to the Nicene Creed, have communion every Sunday and have Liturgies and such. The real Protestants have none of these.

You should always add your special opinion if you’re talking about Protestants, otherwise you will be misunderstood quite frequently
Especially as the Reformed/Lutherans were the REAL Protestants in history, those who always turned up, protesting! (As a native of Germany, living in Worms, I feel rather strongly about that ).

um… “real protestants”?? history would not be on your side with this one. and baptists adhere to the nicene creed as do most pentecostals (or at least they would say they believe everything in the nicene creed even though they don’t recite it in worship). not all lutherans and anglicans use liturgy and have communion every sunday either.

they are out there. there are small communities where people live together celibately. some of these folks renounce marriage for a time and some for life. Shane Claiborne (author of Irresistible Revolution) has spoken about this as has Tony Campolo and others. it is not a forced vow though. people are still free to be in full time ministry, to preach and teach and administer sacraments (yes, there are protestants who believe in sacraments) and either marry or not marry.

Interesting, thank you. FYI, Catholics recognize quite well that most protestant denoms have sacraments, usually 2 (baptism and marriage). And I don’t know of any Christian denom that has “forced vows”. So that is good of the Evangelicals not to force anyone to go celibate!

you are right, i should have chosen my words better. i didn’t mean to say the RCC “forces” people to be celibate. i would say though that there is an enormous pressure on those who feel a call to the priesthood AND a call to marriage to forego the call to marriage. i personally don’t think that is healthy. that is just my beef though. you are definitely right that the church doesn’t force anyone to be celibate.
