Do not go to confession only when you committed mortal sins

I think there are many Catholics think that they just need to go to Confession when they committed a mortal sins.

Do you do that or do you know anyone who thinks like that?

What would you share about your experiences of frequent confessions with others?

technically, you only need confession when you have mortal sin, but if you really want the Grace benefit besides absolution, and one of the best ways to attain true repentance, one should go often. …

I go 1 - 2 times a week, and i love it…I find it amazing why people pay $300/session for therapy, when they can get more healing/forgiveness/Grace by just going to Confession.

I try to go every 2 or 3 weeks. Sometimes to a different parish. I went 3 months just recently and it was aweful. Before someone yells scruples, hear me out. I yearn to hear the Lord’s advice through a holy Priest. Before I go in, I pray for the Lord to be with the Priest. I do exactly what the Priest tells me to do as a penence and try to do it at adoration ,if possible. Even though I had to or felt the need to go to a different parish, it was what I needed at the time. I’m fortunate to have a great selection around me. This may not be the case for some and it is generally recomended to stick with one in which I agree. But one Holy week confession at a parish 30 miles away, they had 11 Priest there. I jumped in the shortest line. I am still in wonder at what I was told that night and it gave me great hope. It is easier for me with venial sins then with mortal sin. I tend to despair over mortal sins and that usually happens after a “chipping away” from too many venial sins or become laxed in prayer. This is what works with me. Tim

I go for venial sins once or twice per month. I don’t have any more mortal sins to report…to my knowledge. It’s a good spiritual cleansing…keeps my conscience stronger. Plus, my new parish priest gives great life advice…I think frequent confessions are wonderful ways to grow closer to Christ…

Mortal sin(s): A must before receiving the Eucharist.

Venial (s): Not necessary, but a good practice. I used to go once a week, but lately more like once a month.

I try to go every two weeks or so. Sometimes it ends up being 3 weeks to a month before I go.

Obviously, if I commit a mortal sin, I try to go immediately. But last time I did that I was told that I hadn’t committed a mortal sin.

Priests at my parish encourage frequent confession - meaning at least monthly or several times monthly, even when there is no mortal sin present. This is how we build holiness - to admit to lesser faults and sins. We get sacramental graces to build virtue.

In fact, I would say my parish - Assumption Grotto - could be the confession capital of metro Detroit. We have long lines every Sunday before the main masses, and people go on Saturdays too. I’ve never seen anything like it and when I first started going there (not having been to confession in a long time), there was a strong pull, or desire to go, upon seeing three to four confessionals running with longs lines of people. It was “inviting”.

I go once a month. I typically do not have mortal sin on my conscience. I truly believe that the only way I could keep from mortal sin is to go to confession regularly.

I went through a 17-year period without confession. You get to a point where your conscience is unable to recognize sin. Sins become habit. When you do feel guilt, you look for anyone other than a priest to advise you.

The longest I have gone without confession since having returned from the 17-year drought is about 3 months. I have a sensitive conscience now, which is good and bad. I’m trying to locate the peaceful middle ground between scrupulosity and ignorance.
