It seems that some people believe that commiting serious sins (sexual sins/murder were mentioned) is a sign that a person isn’t really a Christian.

What do you think? So realy Christians commit serious sins?

Every one sins. That’s a fact of the fall of man. Even christians. Christians aren’t sinless or perfect. They just recognize the need for change through the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.

Gee, I hope so! Wait, that sounded wrong. I don’t think we SHOULD commit serious in, but I guess there’d be a LOT of people who’d have to stop calling themselves Christians if the criteria was that you never blew it…sometimes severely. The question is, are you living with your sin, (thus committing it over and over) or are you making a real effort to repent? I think I’d have a hard time calling myself a Christian if I wasn’t making a concerted effort to NOT sin…even knowing I was bound by my human nature to mess up from time to time.

It’s like that old bumper sticker said:

Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.

I seem to remember that Jesus said that the “Just Man” sin seventy times daily (or was it 7?). There is a reason he gave the apostles the power to not only baptize (which cleanses one of their sins) but also the power to forgive sins.

All sin, and all fall short of the standard that God sets for us. But through faith, grace and the sacraments (which are a means of delivering grace) we can hope that we will be saved.

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; - St. Paul’s First Epistle to St. and Bishop Timothy 1:15

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. - St. Paul’s First Epistle to Christian Church in Corinth 6:9-11

Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part in me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not every one of you.” - The Gospel According to St. John 13:1-9 (most apropos for Holy Thursday)

Paul stated that he did not do what he wanted to and did what he did not want to do. he fought against the flesh.

He struggled with sinning, serious sin evidently.

I do also, as i come from a background of great sin and evil doing.
God helps me to be more Holy through the sacraments, especially confession and Eucharist, and through accountability with other men.

What Christian is** not** in continual need of the Blood of Christ to cleanse from sin ? A single sinful word as truly sinful as the greatest possible crime, so there is no room at all for boasting that one is better than others.

ISTM that this completely destroys all possible shadow of justification for Christians to taunt Christians in other Churches for their sins.

The trouble with judging that someone is not a Christian is that we are not competent to do so. We are blinded by our own sins, ignorances, biases, preferences, incomplete insight, lack of compassion, lack of wisdom, & so on. So all judgements by Christians about others are no more than provisional. If we do not have perfect self-knowledge, & do not know our own sins, nor what excuses we may have that free us from guilt, how we can claim a certainty about others we do not have regarding ourselves ? Why is it so hard to leave these things to God ? Let Him be Judge.

Erm…I think you’ve got it mixed up 🙂
The place where Jesus talks about forgiving someone 77 (not 70) times is in Matt 18:21, where Peter asks how many times he should forgive his brother.

The point you’re trying to make, however, is correct though.

The other passage the OP had in mind, that says “the just man sins seven times [a day]” may be this one in Proverbs 24:

  • 15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;
  • 16 [5 (http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/proverbs/proverb24.htm#foot5) For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.
  • 17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,
  • 18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.
  • 19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;
  • 20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
    See also:
  • Psa 119:164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.
  • Luk 17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
