Do some prayers obligate us to act?

An example in the St. Jude novena which I like to pray…

I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour granted me by God and to always honour you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.

Other prayers have similar lines in it, does it mean I have to encourage this devotion everywhere?

It seems to be a promise to encourage others to also pray to St Jude doesn’t it.

Not unless there’s an open manhole! 😉

It is a point worth considering though when we make our various vows and prayers, we should I think be reading the small print, we are heard after all.

As an example; in part of The Hail Holy Queen we say “…that meditating on these Mysteries of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”
“Imitate what they contain.” Serious stuff.

I’m wary of such prayers, Nelka. Those which demand that you make open-ended promises to share, are also often those claiming to never fail.
Such prayers and promises are formulated by people not by the Church.
Even with such prayers, one can’t triumph over the free will of other people.
The results is still yes or no, they aren’t guaranteed.

God does love you, and praying is valuable. We must trust hope and pray.

Life is difficult. All of us experience difficulties, hurt, hardships, grief, far more than we can or do articulate. Sometimes it’s the consequences of choices we made, often in good faith, sometimes the cruel effects of others’ choices continuing to impact upon us, sometimes it’s the desperate helplessness of seeing our children’s bad choices and sufferings, it can be illness, unemployment, poverty, loneliness, fear, but all of us have some or all of those things.

We pray for strength to bear it, the grace to help, the grace to change things … but suffering won’t be over as long as we live here on earth.
We pray in hope some things can change, some problems will be solved, for peace and healing , for spiritual, physical, emotional, mental … for others and for ourselves … knowing God does love us.

We do the best to overcome the troubles as when as we can, sometimes with others help, and in hope and trust that God will sometimes allow us miracles. Sometimes the sufferings are meant to purify us and sanctify us but instead we cling to the misery witout allowing Him to lead us deeper into trust and holiness. That’s very human. But when that happens we fell God doesn’t care, but He cares more than we know how to accept
