Do sons bear the sins of the father?

Whether or not it’s taught, in my life I have seen it. My own father was a rather unsavory character, and I get to experience the result of that every day. The good news is that although God is perfectly just, he is also perfectly merciful. Accessing that mercy requires repentance and contrition, two things my own dad has little of.

Exactly.

If your dad gambled away the family fortune, you have to live with not being rich.

On the other hand, if your dad committed X sin, you do not have to go to confession or to purgatory for it.

It’s more a case of him doing things, that in his mind at worst were just personal sins. We as Catholics understand that there is no such thing, and any sin has an effect on the entire body of Christ. When I experience effects of this, I have learned to “offer it up.” Forgiveness, humility, and prayer have become survival tools.
