I’m so confused. I have been taught that when we die, many of us must go to Purgatory for cleansing before we go to Heaven. We pray for the souls in Purgatory to shorten their time there we are taught. If this is true, why do some say that we will not enter Heaven until the Second Coming of Christ?

It’s true what you were taught. Those now in Heaven haven’t
glorified bodies yet. If someone sees an angel or saint,
they’re seeing an “avatar”

… why do some say that we will not enter Heaven until the Second Coming of Christ?
There is a particular judgment at death and one may be in heaven, purgatory, or hell then. Later is the Parousia when the bodies are resurrected and judgment is made know to everyone.

Catechism (I added numbers)
326 … “heaven” or “the heavens” can designate both
  1. the firmament and
  2. God’s own “place” - “our Father in heaven” and consequently the
  3. “heaven” too which is eschatological glory.
  4. Finally, “heaven” refers to the saints and the “place” of the spiritual creatures, the angels, who surround God.186
Eschatological means (Collins Dictionary 1) “the branch of theology dealing with last things, such as death, immortality, resurrection, judgment, and the end of the world”.

I understood that during the Second Coming that is, the Final Judgement, Christ will judge again everyone, deceased and not deceased. So whichever state one happens to be in will not matter.

Some do. Some go to Hell. Some go to purgatory.

We face a particular judgement at our moment of death, which is irreversible, and a final judgement at the second coming, when the soul will be reunited with a glorified body.

The souls of those who die in a state of perfect grace will go to heaven. The souls of those who die with non-mortal blemishes will go to purgatory (but all souls in purgatory will, at some point before or at the moment of the final judgement enter heaven), and those who reject God at without repentance will be doomed to hell.

It is also to important to note that despite these beliefs, it is not up to us mortals to decide which souls fall into which category.

Judgement rests with the Lord, alone!

Those that at the Particular Judgment are to hell are also to hell at the Final Judgement.
Those that at the Particular Judgment are purgatory or heaven are to heaven at the Final Judgement.

Jesus gave the story about a man who when he was died was “comforted” in heaven, a story in the Gospel of Luke:
Luke 19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24 He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ 27 He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” (Luke 16:19-31)
