Do the dominican brothers celebrate the extraordinary form of mass or are they modern?

I was wondering if the Dominicans are modern or if they are traditional monks who celebrate TLM?

Lay Dominican here.

First of all, a slight quibble. Dominican priests are not monks, they are friars. While we try our best to balance contemplative and active aspects of religious life, we’re still an active religious Order.

Secondly, in general, they don’t. However, we Dominicans have our own rite which has existed longer than the Tridentine Mass. While it’s not very wide spread, some brothers do know it. It seems to be more (emphasis on more) common in the Eastern and Western provinces. If you’d like to hear more about the Dominican rite in general, here’s a website. They also post pictures of Masses done using it occasionally.

Here’s some brothers chanting the “O Lumen”, a traditional Gregorian chant praising St. Dominic. Their whole channel posts Dominican chants.

We have a rich, beautiful liturgical tradition. I would like to see it more wide spread.

If you have any questions about our Order, I’d be happy to try and answer them.

I am not familiar with a large number of Dominicans. The two parishes staffed by Dominican priests both have the OF as their primary Mass, as follows:
Mon.-Fri. Dominican rite 6 a.m., OF 7 a.m. and noon.
Sat: Dominican rite 6 a.m; OF 8 a.m., “Sunday” OF 5:30 p.m.
Sunday: Dominican rite 11 a.m.; OF 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The Dominican rite is similar to the EF.

The other parish is a campus parish; as they do not note any of the Masses as Dominican rite, I would presume they are all OF.

They are a mendicant order, and are not monks. They are formally known as the Order of Preachers (O.P.).
