Do the Saints and angels hear our mental prayers to them?

If it is true that only God can read what is going on in the mind, and that not even Satan knows for sure what we are thinking at any given moment, does that mean when we pray to saints and angels we must externalize it somehow? Do they not hear it if it is said in thought alone?
